Author CCNA and 837 router questions

Hi there,

New to this newsgroup, I tried to find an answer before I posted but failed
so...

1) I have just started working through my study guide for 640-801 (CCNA). I
think I will finally have ADSL at home in the next couple of weeks and I was
intending to buy a cheap Netgear router/hub for around 70 notes. I then
looked up the Cisco solution which seems to be model 837 (or maybe an
826..?) but this will cost around 600 or so. I was wondering whether the 837
model was likely to be useful for me to practice IOS commands and fool about
with configs etc. or whether it was likely to be so entry level that the
commands supported were not worth the effort. Maybe I should just get the
Netgear and get an IOS emulator program which I have heard are available.

2) If anyone has specific experience of the 837, I was wondering whether I
was likely to be able to limit the bandwidth used by one of the integrated
network ports. I.e. if I connect a web server to it for example, whether I
can limit it to using a maximum of 128Kb/sec for example to prevent it
choking me browsing on another port or two.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know about the 837, I use 3 catalyst 3200 switches with
(ws-x3011) blades Cisco 2503 router in each. The 2500 series seems to
be the standard for the home certification LABs. I think the 4000
series would be a choice to consider as well.

If you're determined to have a Cisco ADSL router and something you can use for
your CCNA studies I would suggest a 1720 along with a WIC-1ADSL (you can also
substitute the 1720 with a 2610 or 2611................keep in mind that the
2600's have constant running fans and can be pretty noisy for home use)

The 1720 has 2 WIC slots which will give you options and room for growth in the
future and the WIC-1ADSL will give you your connectivity (depending on your
flavor of DSL).

Something like this perhaps:

(you can either sell the ISDN WIC or save it for your CCNP studies)
