I am studing for the cisco 640-801 ccna exam. is there any particular
book that you recommend. I have the cisco press books and find them
boring. they were the only thing available at the time. if you can
provide a title, author and ISBN if possible.

Thanks in advance

I don't think you'll find any CCNA book to be a whimsical fairytale but I like the Sybex CCNA Study Guide 4th Edition. I also have the Cisco Press CCNA Flash Cards, Cisco Press CCNA Router and Switch eSIM, RouterSim's CCNA CertSim, two Cisco 2501 routers, an old CCNA for Dummies book, and a few non-certification Cisco-related books.

I suggest that you have the Cisco Press book and read it along with Sybex
book - Cisco press gives you everything you need to know for the exam, Sybex
makes it a lot clearer at times. But its crucial to have both books and read
them interchangeably in order to prepare well.

Thanks all for the material recomendations. I purchased the Sybex
640-801 deluxe book. However there are a few more questions....

1. I was thinking of making my own lab at home. I have a cisco 1600
router at home on loan from a friend. can I make that into a switch
and/or a router depending on my configuration of it? I think I read
that it was possible some where. Is it true. If so is it easy for a
newbie?

2. I was thinking of getting another router off of e-bay. so that I
have two to work with. which do you reccommend?

3. I currently have a 1 PC that i am working with (500mhz, 356k ram,
30Gb HD). do I need another one. If so what is the min req. of the pc
and min OS? What is the recommended OS?

Thanks in Advance....

You can't really turn your router into a switch although switching is used as a generic term to describe a router passing information between its interfaces. As far as routers to study for the CCNA, the 2500 series is the most popular because they are relatively inexpensive. I bought two 2501's which work great. Your computer's OS is not really a concern as long as you have a terminal emulator such as HyperTerminal or TeraTerm and a few unoccupied serial ports.

Hope that helps.

Hello Goha,

I am building a small lab home and it is working pretty well.
First you have to spend the time to do it...
Right now the routers on E-bay seem kind of expensive
I have home 3 1601 router and a 1924 switch
I bought a card for serial 1600 on top
Now I am in business (have an extra hub at home)

For CCNA1 course you basically need nothing
For CCNA2 course you would need 3 routers (1 communicate with the other 2)
For CCNA3 you need the switch and 3 routers
For CCNA4 should be OK with this conf but I take CCNA 3 right now
But I learn that you can buy time in some lab in Toronto for about 3$US
an hour if you want to practice some bigger stuff.

You can also go with a 2501 and two 1601 and two DCE/DTE cable that are
pretty cheap.

If you go with 2502 it is token ring cheap to buy but you have to go
with it all the way. Routers are usually a lot cheaper

My 3 routers on E-bay cost me 100$US (for 3 of them) + around 60$ US
shipping my switch 90$ local pickup. My wic-1t card (serial port) 46$
US. local pickup and the 2 cables less than 30$us including shipping.

I have memory home so they go to 18 meg.

The standard for a lab home is the 2500 serie (2) and a switch but I
prefer my way and it is cheaper for the way I see it except maybe a 2501

A cheap router 1601 would be between 30 and 40$us (risky non-DOA but I
didn't had any problems DOA garantee might be lot more expensive)

Right now they are more expensive

Maybe you can finish a link with a 800 serie they are very cheap right
now (5$ to 20$). I bought 3 today and 1 766 router for 40$us today, but
I will probably will have to buy a IOS 12 for them so they will be worth
the work or it will be my lost. (still I can upgrade them with 8megs mem
and sell them again).

Question 3- You can look at other routers with no problem with 1 comp
but it is always nice to get another one maybe the other one won't ping.
You just need a cheap one (even a 486 would do it but add so much work
for you). Networking look so easy but in the real field it's not
working. At least, you can test what you configure ;-)

gOOD Luck
