IOS for 2501 Router
|
|
| Sean Malone 2003-08-24, 1:28 pm |
| Hi everybody,
I just bought a used 2501 router and I'm trying to upgrade the IOS. I've
been trying to download the IOS from Cisco without success. Is there
another way I can get the IOS for the 2501 router? Or is there someone who
has an cisco account who can download the IOS for me? I'm studying for the
CCNA and I would like to upgrade my router. Thanks.

Your options for obtaining Cisco IOS (copyrighted software) are to purchase
it from a Cisco reseller, the IOS, or SMARTnet contract which allows you to
download it.

XXXX that. He doesn't need to purchase it. If someone is using a router in
production to gain profit as a business, sure, he needs to buy it ethically.
Or if he is using the router for actual use in an internetwork. But if
someone is PRACTICING AT HOME to learn a skill there is NO REASON he should
REASONABLY have to buy the software. I could care less what anyone else says
about this, it is expensive enough to learn Cisco as it is without buying a
Smartnet contract for a PRACTICE LAB ROUTER. I'll hook you up Sean. Post
your email address and I'll let you download IOS 12.2 Enterprise Plus for a
2501. You need 16/16 to run it. Guys, quit being such hardasses.

What a shitty analogy. You are talking about a piece of hardware. The guy
HAS THE ROUTER. Do you think every time Cisco changes a test that people
should have to go BUY the latest IOS to study? LOL! I bet if I came to your
house and audited your PC, you would have ONLY 100% licensed software....
right? Exactly, hypocrite.
PS:
I work for a Cisco Gold Certified partner. Guess what, our account manager
says Cisco couldn't care less about people using unlicensed IOS images for
educational purposes. K, drive through thanks.

| This debate is age old and getting really monotonous... it would be nice if
someone who has a hookup within Cisco to recommend that the Cisco software
licensing strategists take a look at Microsoft's Not For Resale (NFR)
program. MSFT allows individuals who are associated with an MS distribution
channel (ie. retail place like RadioShack, Staples and the like) to purchase
Microsoft products for next to nothing.
A couple of years ago I purchased NT4 Server for < $150 CAD with 10 CALs.
Perfect for learning, and perfectly legal. The 2003 servers are hella more
expensive, but there's perhaps more substance there. Check it out here:
http://www.microsoft.com/canada/par...fr/default.mspx
There could be tremendous value in bundling a CD with various Cisco Press
books that includes images for the most popular gear for the exam in
question. 640-607 is based on 12.2, so why not put a bunch of 2500 images
on a disc and ship it with the book? Add $25 to the cover price and get a
better certified professional out of it (think about the cost of admission
here: the $100+ book in addition to the hardware, no wonder we all
desperate for jobs, we gotta pay for these labs!). I don't see many pirates
turning a "suddenly independently wealthy" profit on software for antiquated
hardware.
I could be wrong, but my 2c nevertheless.

How about I just distribute the 2500 IOS freely to anyone who asks, why you

Distribute whatever you want, I don't really care. My only point is that a
thief is a thief, regardless of how much shouting the thief does about the
Cisco's profits or anything else.

I sleep well at night, well knowing of the fact that I have distributed
software illegally for long EOL'd products.

| When I posted my question. I had no idea the quick reactions that would be
generated. For me I got this router and it has an old version of Cisco IOS
ver 10.2. I'm studying for the CCNA like alot of people here and I only
want to update it. I can't get the IOS to upgrade it so the router is not
that useful. I will stick with the simulators that I have and hope they are
enough hands-on experience. I"m only trying to achieve what many here have,
the CCNA. I respect those who have achieved their Cisco certs through legal
means.

Look, guys, the simple fact is that illegal software is illegal software,
and I'm not trying to badger you, ec, but you yourself have admitted that
what you are doing is illegal. Now, is this the greatest crime in the
world? No. But it's still illegal, and the fact that you say that you work
for a gold partner but you won't say which, and while you say your Cisco AM
says it's acceptable, you won't give any names attests to the fact that
something's not on the up-and-up. If Cisco really wanted to allow a legal
distribution of IOS for educational purposes, then they could easily modify
their license to allow that. But they haven't.
Again, ec, not trying to badger you, but it's one thing to do something that
you know is illegal, but it's quite another to then claim that your actions
are somehow legal. Time was, people who used to distribute warez knew that
what they were doing was illegal. No warez distributor except the most
ardent techno-anarchist seriously attempted to argue that what he was doing
was somehow on the up-and-up.

| I just got 2524 from ebay... It has IOS 11.2 and no NAT. And I ned
something with NAT. I someone can share it with me I'd really
appretiate it
My email: dazipe nospam @yahoo.com

| Hello Daniel,
it is not so easy.
First is that you need a ios with the "ip plus" feature set. I know a
version in 11.2 was available it need 4mb memory and 8mb flash. The next
Release was 11.3 but there where no Version of General deployment. And the
ver. 12.0
needs 6mb memory and 8mb flash.
The second is, to download software from cisco you need a cco-account.
Sorry for that.

| ec- If this is still on offer, I'd also like to get the enterprise
plus version of the ios so as to run is-is commands. I'm not running
a business, just want to complete my lab.
