unfortunatly most new laptops drop the serial port, so you are forced to use a USB to Serial adapter have used a few dif ones with varying success. I used TRIP LITE brand on a Toshiba with Win 2k for a couple of years, PROS nice compact design CONS the dr
iver support for XP sucks.
I have a new laptop now and I am using the Belkin Product works well with XP.

A couple of tips:
Settings should be 9600 8 Non and 1
REMEBER everytime you plug into a dif USB port you get a NEW COM port.... keeps it fun ;-)

As for seeing garbage on the terminal, check the setting and then try http://www.emtec.com/zoc/
ZOC kicks Hyper terms XXX.

hope that helps.
