I just recently passed 640-607 this past week, and want to move onto
the CCSP arena. In studying the requirements, and as suggested by the
FAQ, they suggest starting with the SECUR exam, but I am trying to
figure out how to self-study for the 642-501 SECUR without any book to
use until December. I would appreciate any advice as to how I should
approach. Self-study is the only viable option for me, [low budget, no
classroom available in local area] Also would appreciate any info
concerning the exam[# of questions, passing grade, difficulty]

I just wrote 640-100 (MCNS). i bought the CiscoPress book Managing Cisco
Network Security. I learned a lot from the book.
I was caught off guard the first time i wrote. i didn't realize that the
Eazy VPN, authentication proxy and IDS would be topics. i downloaded some
docs from www.cisco.com and passed the exam easily on the second try. the
PIX was not covered on the exam at all. i'll propably cover the PIX next

Thanks for the response, but 640-100 retires on Tuesday, which does
not help me.

I used "CCSP Securing Cisco IOS Networks" from Sybex. This book is a bit
superficial in some areas but covers 95% of what I saw in the exam. Beware
that Router MC for VPN is not covered at all.
I complemented my studying with Boson's SECUR test and passed easily :-)
