CCNA -- experience is enough ... a true tale

| Well, I just spent an hour or two going thru all the trails and
tribualtions of various CCNA canditates.
So, I'll add my story....
I've been working with IP, IPX, Appletalk and DEC for the last 10years.
On the Wan side, I've done some ATM, tons of Frame-relay and ISDN.
I've done the ICRC / ACRC courses many years ago.
SO ... After finding myself on the "street", It became clear that
a CCNA would help. Funny, how certification doeen't seem so important
whan you have a place to hang your hat everyday. Seems that 10yrs+
experience is easily overpassed to the 20yr who crammed for this exam..
So I signed up to a test center, over the Web, walked in 6 days later
and passed.
After forking over the coin just to "shake the dice", I thoght it would
be prudent to prepare. Go to the local bookstore and rifle thru the
CCNA prep books.
Here i stumbled upon a cisco proprietary protocol known as VTP. Many
hours (and many beers later, just tell the wife your "studying" and you
get a license to stay up late) going thru the Cisco pages reading this
and that.
So for all you guys in the field for a while don;t get all freaked out..
If you've done it... and know why your doing what you do... your CCNA is
there for the talking.

All Cisco exams are supposed to be easy if you have experience. At
most you might have to brush up on a protocol or two or learn one of
the Cisco proprietary ones that you haven't used before.

| I think your point should be well taken that certifications have value even
if your experience more than covers it. Everybody should get certifications
in their field whenever possible. It never hurts to have it. Good Luck to
you.

I've done LAN/WAN work for the past 11 years but very little on Cisco
gear. I mean, when you've actually upgraded a LAN from shared
10Base2 to switched 100BaseT - you appreciate the improvement!
I was weak on IPX/SPX (we had very little Netware) and the ISDN
functional groups and reference points still haven't sunk in - but I
can subnet like a sonofagun! Just completed an authorized CCNA course
from a local trainer and picked up some new info plus reinforced lots
of prior knowledge.
I figure a week more of studying then I'll write the test. I plan to
register in time to take the 640-607 exam.
FWIW, I've picked up LOTS of supplemental reference books from the
local library. Some are for the older 640-507 exam but... 'ya can't
beat free!
