Author Help connecting 2500 router to cable modem

I'm trying to connect a cisco 2509 router to my cable modem (linksys) but
have had no success in gettng basic connectivity to the internet ...

I would like the modem to dynamically assign an ip address to the ethernet
port on the 2509 ... from my provider I have the default gateway, dhcp
server address dns server(s) addresses, etc ...

Any help on this would be appreciated as I'm just getting started on Cisco
equipment ....

I don't know if the 2500's support this, but you need the *ip address dhcp*
on the ethernet interface facinf the modem. But it's not that simple, you'll
probably need to implement NAT also..
www.google.com is your best friend =)

Thanks SD,

Doesn't look promising to start, I cannot ip address dhcp on that interface
.... I'm trying a couple of other options now and we'll see how it goes ...
google doesn't seem to have an answer as of yet but I'll keep digging,
thanks ...

no problem, I know you'll need to probably get a new IOS for the box to get
the ip address dhcp command, but like I said, I don't know if she supports
it.

Why don't you just set up a member server with Win2000 Server on it? It
could be an old 233mhz desktop that only has DHCP on it. You don't even
have to authorize it to a Domain Controller in Active Directory, unless you
are already in a AD Domain. You can set this up within 45 minutes.. real
easy....might be an option for a work around.

Hope this helps if you can't get the Router to work with DHCP.

You have a few options.

1) Linksys uses 192.168.1.0 /24 address space. Use one to assign to
your E0 interface. Then the router's default gateway to 192.168.1.1
(linksys box)

2) Enable RIP on the inside interface of Linksys. Do the same on the
router (but you still need to manually address the E0 interface)

3) Get an IOS (12.X something) that supports DHCP.
