Author 2501 problem. Got any advise?

Hi all. I posted this question a while back and was wondering if I
might get a bit more advise. I have a Cisco 2501 router. It was used
when I got it and still had the password in it. I think the IOS had
been erased. The boot rom chips were set to boot up from a server.
Well, to make a long story short, I replaced the flash and boot roms.
Now when I connect to the router through Hyperterminal all I get is
garbage on the screen. I have tried different jumper settings. I know
the console cable is good because I use it with another router and it
connects fine. I should be getting a small setup program from rom but
again, all I get is utter garbage. As I said, when I first got this
router it would boot up and I would get a user prompt and it would ask
for a password. After trying a password recovery I found it would try
to boot from a server. I'm not sure where I have messed things up.
Could the SIMM memory be bad? It currently has no IOS or configuration
file as I can't get a prompt to install anything. I have tried
installing the old roms and flash but still get garbage. Got any ideas
other than a sledge hammer or Smith&Wesson 32? Thanks all.

Hi,

I don't know about the other bootroms. I would say :
1. place the original boot roms back plus original bootroms settings.
2. Connect you pc via the terminal cable.
3. start Hyperterm
4. power on your router
5. hit Crtl-Break a serveral times to stop normal start up enend op in rom
monitor mode. (if the router does not response you hyperterm is not sending
the ctrl-break correct, upgrade or use an other term emulator (or a
terminal))
6. in rom monitor mode issue this command: o/r 0x2142
7 then enter this command : i
this should boot the router from normal IOS whithout any config so also
without any passwords. (if it tries to boot from server just wait for it to
timeout and resume, few minutes)
8 erase the startup
9 set config-register to 0x2102 from the global config mode

If IOS does not load let me know , you have to install IOS via the console
cable. Do you have IOS?

Thanks for responding Amigo. This router has no IOS. Furthermore, I do
not get any type of prompt. Just garbage on the Hyterminal screen. I
wish I could describe the type of garbled-gook characters that appear
but my keyboard won't make those symbols. It's just junk. I have
reinstalled the old roms, old flash...etc and tried to take the router
back to it's original state but with no luck. I get the same garbage
on screen whether I am using the old or new roms and flash. The only
think I can think of is the SIMM memory may be damaged, if at some
time, I touched them and shocked them with electro static. The new
roms came from a seller on ebay and came with the cisco documentation
and instruction booklet. Thanks.

From what your saying it sounds to me like the baud rate ect, isn't set
correctly.

I'm new to Cisco, but I do have knowledge regarding Comms and modems and
basically its a comm port.

Even WITHOUT memory in the router, it should give you some kind of text,
and then error out. Check your terminal settings, make sure your set to
9600-N-8-1 w/o hardware flow control. Make sure your cable, and
connectors are good.

Basically, you screwed something up when you did your password recovery.
That is, you most likely changed the console ports speed.

So do your password recovery again with a proper terminal program like
"Tera Term"
