Author 640-607 deadline?
C. Steven Garrido

I finished my 4th semester of the academy in may. I was under the
impression that I had until the end of 2003 to take the test before it
is retired. Now I heard that I have to "register" to take the test by
the end of September. Does this mean that I have to take the test
before the end of september. Also, what if I fail and need to retest?
Is there a time limit? Can someone please explain this to me? I had
planned on taking the test early to mid october, with the idea that I
had to the end of the year if I needed to take it again. Thanks in
advance.

Register means register to take. The 9/30 date is the cut off for
registering. Be sure to call your local Prometric center of interest
though because some of them are totally clueless concerning this.
Also Prometric allows you to register for a test supposedly up to 8
weeks in advance. This would give you additional time.

The Cisco Networking Academy website is of no help in solving the
confusion though in terms of what the Cisco Academy has previously
posted concerning the end dates for the exam ie the December 2003 vs
March 2004 dates. I finally received e-mail from the Academy saying
that for the general public the end date will be 9/30 though
presumeably that will include the leeway of registering at a Prometric
center ON 9/30 for an actual test date that's up to 8 weeks in
advance. Notice I said presumeably. However current CCNA Cisco
Networking Academy students, instructors, and alumni such as yourself
will be allowed to take the exam up until the March 2004 deadline.
They have stipulations concerning retesting within that period. I have
the actual e-mail at home on my other rig and will try and post it
here within this thread during the next 24 hours. There is a process
you must go thru in order to be able to use the expanded time frame.

I understand your situation all too well since I also just graduated
from the Academy and had little to zero help getting this info until
the e-mail finally arrived from the Academy this week. IMHO I think
their plan was up till fairly recently a work in progress concerning
exactly how they were going to implement the expanded dates for the
Academy community. Also it took me multiple e-mails for the Academy to
acknowledge in exact words that alumni were part of this plan for the
expanded test dates. E-mails worded as, " the Academy community will
be able to take the test up to 3/04 ", were of no help to me unless I
was part of that community. Being in cover your XXX mode I figured
that if the crap hit the fan later on and if I was denied access to
the exam on the expanded dates I would have that e-mail in plain
english saying I was part of the community allowed to take it. Man it
was like pulling teeth for them to finally acknowledge that.

Good luck on the exam.

Steve, here is the info Cisco sent:

Thank you for updating this incident with your request. Eligible
Academy students and instructors can receive a promotional code that
will enable them to take the CCNA 640-607 exam or the BSCI 640-901,
Remote Access 640-605, Routing 640-603, or Support 640-606 after these
exams have retired for the general public. Cisco has arranged for
promotional codes to enable students and instructors currently
enrolled in a CCNA 4, CCNP 1, 2, 3 or 4 class that began on or after
May 1, 2003 or for students or instructors who have graduated from a
CCNA 4, CCNP 1, 2, 3 or 4 course on or after May 1, 2003. The promo
code is good from the date it is received by the eligible individual
until the exams are no longer available via this special program on
March 31, 2004. Eligible students and instructors must register on the
Alumni site to receive a promotional code. Promotional codes will be
e-mailed to eligible students and instructors who are registered on
the Alumni Site and have opted in to receive Cisco Networking Academy
Program related information from Cisco. E-mails will be sent twice
monthly until March 31, 2004 to account for new members of the Alumni
Connection or for already existing members who elect to opt in. To
join the Alumni Connection, please follow the steps below: 1. Login
into the Academy Connection site at http://cisco.netacad.net/ 2. Click
'Alumni Home' in the Navigation Box on the left-hand side of the
screen 3. Complete the Registration To “opt in” to receive an e-mail
with a promotional code, please follow the steps below once you have
completed the steps above: 1. Login into the Academy Connection site
at http://cisco.netacad.net/ 2. From you Student or Instructor Home
Page, click “My Profile” at the very top, right side of the page 3.
Click “Edit Profile” 4. Scroll down to the section titled,
“Participation Opportunities.” 5. Check the “yes” button for the
question, “Do you want to receive Cisco Networking Academy Program
related information from Cisco via email?” Once you have received your
promo code you can opt back out if you choose to do so. Please
remember that once you graduate from the program, unless you are a
registered member of the Alumni Site you will no longer have access to
Academy Connection and thus to the Alumni site and to offers such as
this. Some important reminders about this special offer: · The promo
code is only to be used by those who are eligible. · The promo code
cannot by transferred to or shared with any other person. ·
Individuals found using the promo code who are not eligible will have
their certification exam score(s) nullified whether they are in the
Networking Academy Program or not. · There is no discount associated
with the promo code. · If the tester fails on the first attempt, the
promo code can be used again by the same individual who used it on the
first attempt. There are two attempts maximum. · Plan accordingly to
take your exam. There will be absolutely no extensions for promo
codes. You must register and complete the exam by March 31, 2004. ·
You will be required to give your Academy Connection ID and the
Username you use when you log in to Academy Connection when you
register with Pearson VUE or Prometric. No exceptions will be made. ·
Promo codes need not be used with discount vouchers. Discount vouchers
will enable a student or instructor to take either the new or the old
exam until March 31, 2004. Please submit any questions you have via
the “Help” link that can be found on each page of post-login Academy
Connection.

Thank you for passing this along. I'm an academy student. When I asked my
local IT exam center they weren't aware of the March 31, 2004 stipulation so
I'm passing this on to them. Thanks again.

JK,

At the very end of Cisco's answer they say "Discount vouchers
> will enable a student or instructor to take either the new or the old
> exam until March 31, 2004. "

Are they saying that if you have a valid discount voucher you can register
at anytime until Mar 31, 2004 and the promo code isn't necessary at all? In
other words, if you're a recently graduated student and you're not ready to
test within the Sep 30, 2003 + 45 day window, and you go in after Nov 15 and
try to register you'll be able to with the discount voucher? Then, if you
need to take the exam again after that point, if you have the promo code you
can take the exam again?

I wish Cisco would put the final, cover all the bases answer on their
website. There is still some confusion out there. They SHOULD say (if true)
that, if you are current or former networking academy student, with a valid
discount voucher, you can take the 640-607 exam until Mar 31, 2004. If, at
some point between now and Mar 31, 2004, you have taken the exam for the
first time using the discount voucher and need a second attempt at any time
until Mar 31, 2004, you can do so as long as you have the promo code via the
netacademy. Maybe this is what they are saying but they haven't spelled it
out. What is your take on this?
