Author CISCO LAB - Building my first
JohnNews

Folks:

I am preparing to build my first CISCO LAB. I plan to tackle CCNP and CCIE.

* Would $2000 be sufficient for this lab ... I plan to buy used equipment ?
* What (and how many devices) do I need in terms of routers and switches
and cables ?
* Where can I purchase these items - used equipment OK ?
* Can your suggested equipment also be used for CCDP preparation?

Thanks,
John

I'm not going to be a whole lot of help here but can give you a little
advice.
$2000 should be fine for CCNP but I don't think it will cut it for CCIE. I
think I used 4 x 2500 series routers a CAT switch and an ISDN simulator for
CCNP. I just recently passed my CCDP... I did not use any equipment for
this. There is very little on the CCDA/CCDP exams that have to do with
actually configuring the devices. Most of the info you will need will be
obtained from simply reading.

Brian:

Thanks and good enough advice so far!

Do I have to buy any special cables to accompany the routers & switches and
if so what?
Where did you buy your routers and switches? Is there a site that you would
recommend?
Which catalyst switch is good through to CCIE?
Is there a way to avoid the ISDN SIMULATOR and buy the CISCO device with an
integrated ISDN port?

Thanks again,
John.

John.

Hi! For the CCIE lab, you'll definitely want at least one Cat 3550, if not
two. As far as cables go, you'll want a bunch of back-to-back db60 cables,
and probably an octal cable or two for your access-server. Other than that,
the cables are pretty much standard straight-through patch cables.

A typical higher end CCIE home lab:

Three Cisco 2501
Two Cisco 2503
One Cisco 2511
One Cisco 2514
One Cisco 2522
One 2620
One 2610
Voice modules
cables, xcvrs, etc
2x cat 3550
isdn simulator

For a CCNP lab, $2k is pretty good.

Brad;

Thanks a whole lot for sharing this information with me. Here are a few
more related questions:

* Could you make a list of CISCO devices that I would need in order to
build a "Typical higher end CCNP Home Lab"?
* Could you list the reason/purpose for each device in your "Typical
higher end CCIE Home Lab"?
* Any special/additional features of the different devices in your CCIE
list? Why not 6 or 7 Cisco 2500 routers?
* Do you have any rough cost information for used equipment?

Thanks again,
John.

few 2500, 2 with BRI, ISDN simulator, ..

you need to know voice, so in 2500 you cannot test it. so in 2600 you
put voice modules

1x should be enought, 2x is hi end

John,

Marcin pretty much answered your questions below. If you want a price for
the whole package:
http://www.optsys.net/kit7.html

That also breaks down all of the cables and accessories you'll probably need
in some more detail.
