Newbie alert!!

I have upgraded the memory and IOS on several routers and now I have
to upgrade both the memory and flash on a 1720 router.
What is the procedure to upgrade the flash memory. I understand the
flash holds the IOS so is this card hot swappable? If not, then how do
I put the new IOS on the new flash card so the router can boot?
