| I recently purchased an Catalyst 1200 at an auction to start
building a cisco home lab. I am having trouble trying to connect it to
see if it works.All i know is that it powers up and I get the green
lights saying it passed its self test. I am using a RJ45 to serial cable
connected to my PC's COM 1 port using 9600 Baud - 1 Stop bit, No
parity and 8 Data bits. Can someone please tell what I am doing
wrong.

| I'm a newbie myself but what you are describing is a console cable. It
allows you to configure the device but has nothing to do with the
'network' side of the device.

| I also purchased one and I use just a regular RJ-45 straight thru cable (not
a rollover, not a crossover) this cable connects to the Admin port in back
of switch and then to my PC via DB-9 to RJ-45 adapter. It works excellent
via telnet. I had used the same cable as I used for my router but that did
not work. Used same adapter and switched to straight thru cable and got in.

| Also forgot to tell you if have the right cable, try COM 2 also.

| If you can not get that to work we can send out a console cable kit for 10
bucks plus shipping. And you should not have any more problems.

Also you may want to try connecting at different speeds someone may have
changed the speed on it when upgrading the software. Good luck.

| Help again. I have tried many different configurations with no luck. I have
tried com1, com2 and the tcp/ip route. Is there something special that I am
missing or is the switch just dead? Should something come up from the
HyperTerminal automatically or is there a windows configuration I am flat
out missing. Any Help is appreciated.

Have a look at this page:

You need to connect your computer to the Admin-port before you plug in
the powerchord of the switch. After that the switch should introduce
itself to your terminal trying to resolve the hardware address of the
Admin-port before it asks for the configuration.

still no luck. I was wondering must you use a DB-25 to RJ45 to connect ? I
am using a RJ45 to DB9 cable.

RJ-45-to-DB-25 adapter cable. (See Figure 4-1.) For admin. port DTE
and data communications equipment (DCE) pinout information, refer to
the section "Admin. Port Pinout" in the appendix "Wiring

And afaik you definitely need that RJ-45-to-DB-25 adapter cable.
It is rather more part of the switch than accessory and should be
provided by the seller. Maybe you can contact him again. Chances are
that he configured the switch already so that it has an administration
IP and you can access it via telnet without the cable or you can
access it via the DC0 port.

| If it is configured correctly it should work. Did you buld your own cable
or purchase it from a manufacturer? I purchased a DB-9 to RJ-45 adapter and
got the pin out from a reliable on line source, actually it was from someone
in this newsgroup.

In order to telnet to the switch, you need to assign an IP and login
details. How would you do that if you can't get a connection to
configure this?

So if you are sure the cable is ok and it is the right one, there is
only one conclusion: The switch is dead or just configured in a way
that makes it impossible to access it the standard way. Maybe it's set
up to accept only telnet sessions. Again that telnet may have to come
from a special IP or it may only accept SLIP connections or SNMP. Who
knows? We can only provide standard information, since we don't have a
magic orb that reveals everything about your particular switch. If you
buy something from an auction, make sure you get the details along
with it.
The only person that could tell you more is the one you bought it
from.
