Hi all
I am sure this one has been ask before but here goes. I have a Cisco
2501 router in-which I have installed new boot roms and flash memory.
When I connect to it using HyperTerminal all I get is little spades
and " " " " in the HyperTerminal window. Can anyone tell me what is
going on and how to fix it or direct me to a helpful website?
Thanks all.

Yes, I have HyperTerminal set to 9600 baud, 8-n-1 with no flow
control. Should I be using Hardware flow control? I am wanting to
upgrade the IOS on this machine.

I believe it should be either Hardware flow control or none but it depends
on your PC, also verify that your PC com port operates fine. Along with
checking the com ports check the console cable.

Are you sure you got the boot roms in the right sockets? If I remember right
there are 2 and they are different. I think they're marked 1 and 2.
Just a thought.

I think I have the boot roms set right. First, their brand new and
have the boot instructions for the Cisco 2501 router but I get nothing
on the Hyperterminal screen but garbage. The operation system on my PC
is Windows 2000Pro and I use the Hypterminal program that came with
it. Should I not get a mini IOS that would allow me to configure the
router?

Make sure you are using a rolled cable - Pin1-> Pin8 , Pin2->Pin7, etc.
This sounds like a hardware garage thing. Also, make sure you are using
the DB9->RJ48 adaptor that came from Cisco. The flowcontrol on your PC
should be <none>. The console ports on Cisco routers do not supply any
flowcontrol under any circumstances.

Hope this helps,

I would suggest that you put the original parts back in and try the
router again.

then you could perhaps try them in one at a time.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Ok, here is the latest on this damned hosed router. I reinstalled the
flash and boot roms that came with it and I still get garbage in
HyperTerminal. Sometimes when I turn it on I get nothing at all other
times its garbage. I tried different jumper settings and made extra
certain the boot roms are in the right positions. Still, I get little
spades, small black squares and other garbage. I have another router,
2507, and I have no problems with it using the same console cable so I
know it isn't the cable. I am beginning to thing it is either bad ram
memory or something serious with the motherboard. Any other ideas
guys????

well, the baud rate of the Console port can be configured using the
config-register.
so, I would try to connect to the console using all available rates. if it
connects at any other speed you can set the config-register to 2102 and it
will be back at 9600.
