Cisco 2503 to a 2501 DTE/DCE cross connect problems

| I have a cisco 2501 and a 2503 router that I am looking to link together
with a DTE/DCE cable. I can get one of the intefaced to show as being up,
the other just doesn't want to be so kind.
Prouter1 seems to be working fine. It shows:
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status
Protocol
Ethernet0 192.168.0.210 YES manual up up
Serial0 192.168.1.220 YES manual up up
the configuration is as follows:
prouter1#show cont ser 0
HD unit 0, idb = 0xF7A40, driver structure at 0xFCED8
buffer size 1524 HD unit 0, V.35 DTE cable
prouter1#show int ser 0
Serial0 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is HD64570
Internet address is 192.168.1.220/24
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 56 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec, rely 255/255, load 1/255
Encapsulation HDLC, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)
Last input 00:00:01, output 00:00:15, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Queueing strategy: fifo
Output queue 1/40, 0 drops; input queue 0/75, 0 drops
5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
149 packets input, 3278 bytes, 0 no buffer

0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out
5643 carrier transitions
DCD=up DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=up
The second router doesnt seem to want to act as nice. It shows:

the cable is a cisco cable connecting serial 0 on the 2503 to serial 1 on
the 2501

I might be jumping ahead of myself in trying to get something up and
running. I am only on page 250 of my Cisco CCNA book.. But I am interested
in getting something running so that I can play with the command and get a
better feel for the IOS I have before I start re-flashing it to a different
image. Any help would be appreciated.

| What version of the IOS are you running? If I remember right there was some
issue with 11.2 that caused this to happen. If you are running an older
version of the IOS I would recommend upgrading to 12.2 anyway.
Also, take a look at the cable and make sure that none of the pins are bent
on either end.

| I don't see a clockrate. I was having the same problem a couple of weeks ago, and it was because I didn't have a clockrate set. | |

There is a clockrate set on the router which needs one, the one with the DCE
interface.

| I am currenly using IOS flash:c2500-is-l_120-19.bin
I found that after a bit of time, the Prouter1 (DTE end) goes down on the
protocol. ie
prouter1>show ip int brief
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status
Protocol
BRI0 unassigned YES unset administratively down down
BRI0:1 unassigned YES unset administratively down down
BRI0:2 unassigned YES unset administratively down down
Ethernet0 192.168.0.210 YES NVRAM up up
Serial0 192.168.1.220 YES NVRAM up down
Serial1 unassigned YES unset administratively down down
If I go onto prouter2 and do:
PRouter2#conf term
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
PRouter2(config)#int ser 1
PRouter2(config-if)#clock rate 56000
PRouter2(config-if)#
then the connection goes back up on prouter1.
prouter1>show ip int brief

I guess the first question is what is the protocol field refering to? what
would be the fastest way to clear the configuration for the serial ports to
start over again from a clean slate? Would moving to a different IOS help.
I have is loaded right now, but can re-flash it with c,i, is, io, or js
version of IOS (with versions ranging from 11.2-26d to 12.1.20.
The 2500's have 16mb of NVRam and 8mb of flash.

| I gave the cisco example a try and got the two units working with
frame-relay.
i now will have to setup RIP or some other routing, and access lists to get
this to route between the two devices.\
