Hi all. I need some help loading IOS on to a 2501 cisco router. The
router still had a password in it when I bought it from a friend. I'm
not sure I did the password recovery correctly because the router is
in router<boot> mode. when I type ena it goes into exec mode with
router<boot>#. The bootstrap version is 4.14(9.1). The register
setting is 0*2142. Do I need to change that? How? It will not go into
config mode, router<config>#. Here briefly is what I have done:
Installed a NIC, attached an AUI to the router and ran a straight
through cable from AUI to NIC, ran TFTP an set the address for TFTP to
127.0.0.1. When the router starts up I say "No" to the startup
configurations then type "copy tftp flash" and give the name of the
IOS I want to install. I set the path of the IOS in TFTP also. Each
time the transfer times out. I am thinking the router has an older
bootstrap version and I may need to upgrade that. How does that work?
Any help will be appreciated. Post replies here or e-mail me at
ultraflt@earthlink.net.

say yes to config the router so you can
give the AUI (Ethernet 0) an ip address.

127.0.0.1 is a loopback address - you can't use
that to xfer data - it's for testing the ip stack.

make it simple - config the router Ethernet 0
to 192.168.0.254\24 or mask 255.255.255.0.

make your host pc 192.168.0.1\24 or mask 255.255.255.0

You may want to get the most up to date roms
on ebay i order to run the 12.X series IOS - max
out the ram/flash to 16/16 too.

Most importantly, get a good book.
CCNA Study Guide by Lammle (Sybex) for
cert study.

ICND by Cisco Press - good reference and study.

Both can help you with the questions you will have.

good luck

Thank you. I'll give it a try. I may not always get this stuff right
but I really enjoy working with it and trying. I always learn
something new.

Thank you. I'll give your advice a try.

One last thing: I get a message in hyperterminal that says, "this boot
strap version only supports netbooting and may not support the full
command list". From that I assume I need to replace/upgrade the ROM.
Is this a fair assumption?

Yes - get latest boot roms and max out ram/flash
to run 12.x IOS

This article describes the situation you are in.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products...r /> 41aa.shtml

A good thing to check is if you have a full IOS image on your flash at
the moment.

Simple command...dir at the prompt.

Sandbox_TS#dir
Directory of flash:/

1 -rw- 5578560 <no date> c2500-i-l.120-2b.bin
<---filename may vary.

8388608 bytes total (2809984 bytes free)

You're running from the boot flash right now.

I think all you should need to do at the moment to get back to normal
operating mode is change the config register to 0x2102. That tells it
to boot from the first image on the flash: file system.

In config mode (config t, enter) put the following commands in;

config-register 0x2102 [enter]
end[enter]
wr[enter]
reload[enter]

IT should then boot normally assuming you have a valid file on your
flash: file system.

You get that message because you're using the boot rom, it is not a
fully operational IOS image it is there for upgrade purposes. The
procedure is that you boot to that boot rom, then upgrade your flash
image then reboot back to the newly upgraded flash image.

I do not think you need to upgrade the ROM though an increase in
memory to support larger more featured IOS may be called for.

the Todd lammel book and ICND are excellent starting points.

Good luck.

The Mikester.

Also don't you need a cross-over cable when going from a router to a
computer?
