OK

I have been working in IT for some time and am well over 50 years of age.

It took me aroung 9 months to complete with somewhat of a leisurely pace. I
am not one to cram just to pass the exam, or devote my life to it, but I
like to play with the labs and understand the material. I used the cisco
press books - the ones that are used with the cisco courses - Not the ones
that have the CDs in the back. I also used the Exam cram books for the 5xx
series. The Exam Crams may be getting somewhat out dated though.

I would read the Exam Cram book to learn the fundamentals then the cisco
book - do the labs and take notes - Then follow up with intensive Q&A for
about a week. Then take the Exam. This seemed to work for me.

I have a full lab and am becoming an expert on e-bay. I started with
several basic 2501s and a 2520 for my routing lab. Picked up and sold a
2901 for cat ios and 1924--en for my switching stuff. Picked up and sold 2
2524s for BCRAN along with a vconsole ISDN simulator. By the way be careful
when buying the simulator. When I sold the ISDN simulator the guy who made
it - Vconsole - under bid me with my own bidders at auction time. - very
naughty - . Once you get through the end of the course, if you have bought
carefully, you can resell most of your stuff back on e-bay and won't get
beat up too badly.

Right now, I have the 2500 s left along with the 2520 - have sold
everything else. I am thinking of trying for my CCIE in the fall. If this
is the case, it will be with a lot more time and effort than the CCNP and a
lot more expensive - I will need to add a 2610, 2620 and 3550. I am still
undecided - not sure if it is worth the effort and more importantly the
time away from family.

One last item - Learn the material - practice the labs so that you
understand what is going on. To me that is what makes this whole process
worthwhile. The brain dumps are, for the most part, a waste of time. The
Boson exams are OK but somewhat of an overkill. The transcenders are OK.
Test Kings are getting better with some decent explanations in the answers.

Keepin mind :: ->> Every Q&A that I have looked at has had wrong answers.

Also: What worked for me - may not work for you.

Thanks everyone -
I think that one of the best tech books that I have come across is the
Cisco Press book on switching that goes along with the course - By Karen
Webb I believe. Great book - Makes the exam easy - Wonderfully written
