Author CCNA Semester 3: VLANs and broadcast domains

Here's the scenario:

5 LANs [1,2,3,4,5] * 50 users each > Switch > Router < Switch < 5 LANs
[6,7,8,9,10] * 50 users each

So we have 10 LANs in total, 5 per switch.

Let's say that LAN 1 and LAN 6 use the same multimedia application which is
broadcast intensive.

If we apply standard VLAN rules we could combine LANs 1&6 together to form
VLAN 1.
This would give us a total user number of 100.

But this would also increase our broadcast domain from 50 users to 100
users.

My Q:
If, by combining 2 LANs into one VLAN, we create a larger broadcast domain
then why would we bother creating the VLAN in the first place if it can
degrade our network performance?

Is there a way that one can calculate the break-even point to decide if it
is more efficient to have 2 separate LANs instead of the one VLAN?

Thnx
