Author # if VLANs on a Cat 2950 or Cat 1900

Can someone tell me why a 24 port switch can have the # of locally supported
VLANs = 1005?

Isn't one limited to just 24 VLANs [# ports = max # VLANs] ?
Are we talking about daisy chaining the switches ?
Some pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I just had my 1st VLANs class y'day so this is all pretty new to me...

Thanks

For starters it's probably the same IOS on a 12/24/48/?? switch. If I remember
my reading a port can belong to more than 1 vlan. Vlans can be based on things
like MAC address (I think) as well.

OK, after a bit more reading...

The max # of supported VLANs on a Cat 2950xx is 250.

Why then can we assign VLAN IDs of 1-1001 or even up to 4094 [extended
VLANs] if the switch can only support between 64-250 VLANs?
Isn't the total number of available VLAN IDs a bit of an overkill if we
cannot use 3844 of them?

Here's an extract from the Cat 2950 Desktop Switch S/w Config Guide:
"Although the switch supports 4094 VLAN IDs when the enhanced software image
is installed, see the 'Supported VLANs' section on page 13-2 for the actual
number of VLANs supported."

Thnx

Further,
"Since each switch port can only have one VLAN, each hub segment connected
to a switch port can be assigned to only one VLAN. Stations that share a hub
segment are all assigned to the same VLAN group. If an individual station
needs to be reassigned to another VLAN, the station must be relocated to a
corresponding hub." [CNAP Semester 3 © Cisco 2000]

If physical relocation is not possible, the only way to change VLANs for the
station in question is to reconfigure the switch to use MAC addresses for
VLAN assignments instead of using port IDs. Yes?

Thnx
