Author BRI is it a TE1 or a TE2 device???

Hi,

I wrote CCNA about a month ago and failed miserably, the exam was
cancelled 2x and when it was finally up I wasn't prepared. Either way
it was a great learning experience. I had one question concerning a
BRI interface and what was required to connect it for ISDN. Is a BRI
interface considered a TE1 or TE2?? or does it depend on the series
of router? Or am I not getting it at all?

Thanks, for all the info on this ng. Its been very useful. Writing
again in 9 days.

Here is my understanding of it, but I'm just learning about ISDN:
A TE1 is an ISDN compatible device, whereas a TE2 needs an terminal adapter
(TA) to make it work with ISDN.

If the device connects directly to the BRI, then it is a TE1. If it needs a
TA, then it is a TE2.
The Cisco Exam Certification Guide chapter 8 has a table that talks about
these.

Copy and past from my book:
TE1 - Terminal Equipment type 1 understands ISDN standards. Like a BRI
Interface on a router.

The way I explain it is:

A TE1 is an ISDN ready (digital) device.

A TE2 is an Audio device.

The TE2 can be used in an ISDN network if it is adapted with a Terminal
Adapter (TA). The TA converts the audio signal to the digital signal
required by ISDN.

TE1- Compatible to ISDN
TE2- Non-Compatible to ISDN

If it's a BRI it should be compatible which should make it a TE1. Would like
to know the what the whole question stated. Those questions can be tricky.

BRI and PRI interfaces in routers have built-in TE1 so you can call
them TE1.
If you want to use your Serial interface to work as BRI or PRI then
you need a TA as Serial interfaces are TE2 (non ISDN).
