You're better off getting into the enterprise networking market and
getting out of telecommunications altogether. Too many
telecommunications engineers out there with ten years experience and
no job that you will be competing with for the handful of jobs that
are available. On top of that, optical is the most dead of the dead
telecommunications market.

| My honest oppinion, your background isn't very competitive in the market.
The CCNA wont do much of anything for you given your current background. If
I were you I would try to score some very basic networking jobs (cabling,
etc), while at the same time pursuing some higher level certifications. The
problem is right now, your competition is alot of people with 10+ years of
experience and some nice certifications behind them. You don't the
experience, and the experience is hard to get right now.. but you can
atleast match them or surpass them in certification level. Now, make no
mistake, I'm not a supporter of lab rats..there is nothing as valueable as
experience.. but you need every bit of help you can Even with lack of
experience, certifications will help you alot. With lack of experience, but
a high certification level, you can probably land a support job that is well
beneath your knowledge level..but hey, you have to start building that
experience somewhere. Hope my babbling helped atleast somewhat.

| I agree with "Binary Traveler". I was laid off almost a year and a half ago
and, during my search for a job, saw and heard of countless numbers of very
experienced engineers who are still without a job. The situation may or may
not be worse here in the U.S., but it is definitely affecting the world job
market as a whole. One would be lucky to get a job handling phone calls.
As it turned out, I was very blessed to get the job that I currently have.
I thank God everytime I remember the fact that I only spent 2 months looking
for a job before landing this current one. I have been employed for more
than a year now and am enjoying the work I do. We switched over from an all
3Com environment to a mostly Cisco environment, plus I get to do quite a bit
of Unix and NT/2000 admin work.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel, so take courage and start with
what you can now.

[snip]
Let me throw this into the pot. During the dotcom era, anyone with a
CCNx got a job paying decent money. Companies were spending a lot of
money attracting people with not a whole lot of experience. As a
result, personality quirks (read propeller heads) were often overlooked.
Well, times have changed and there are a lot of people to pick from. I
myself have seen 5 people in the last week for technical interviews.
The problem with some of these experience people are that they have no
people skills to speak of...you can tell during the interview that they
won't fit in to the group environment.
One position was filled by a much junior person. First, he was a in-
company transfer. But mostly, it was his can-do attitude. While he was
the Big Man On Campus in his group, he realized that he was a
junior/neophyte person at our organization. He wanted to learn and grow
and was willing to do so. His attitude got him the position.
So when you interview, sell yourself. Sell your skill-set. Sell how
you can fit into the new organization.
Also, *DON'T* elaborate on a question unless you KNOW IT COLD. I don't
how many times a candidate answered something and went onto elaborate.
Only to find themselves in a "uh...uh...uh" situation.
Good luck!

Actually, it's one of the more rare ones. Korea's Smith or Johnson is
Kim and Lee.
