Because the market is volatile, people in the networking environment
end up changing jobs frequently. There need to be some objective
measures to help people weed through the barrage of resumes that land
on a desk for an open position.

I don't cram to get certs for things I don't know. I've passed the
certs to prove that I have the knowledge. I read a few books, on
occasion, to refresh my memory, get me focused on what I need to know
for the test, or fill in minor gaps in knowledge.

A cert doesn't mean that I know more than someone without it, it just
is a 3rd part evaluation of my knowledge to verify that my resume
isn't full of lies like so many I've seen. Come to think of it, my
employers should have known when I was looking to leave. I always
update my certs (or get new ones I've gained the knowledge for) just
before leaving...

Marc
CCSA, WCSP, MCSE, CCNA, CCDA, A+, Network+, Server+, APS (hardware
cert on Compaq/HP stuff)

Yes, most of those are worthless. My current employer pays for my
test and encourages multiple certs because I spend most of my time
contracted out and certs are occasionally necessary for gvt contracts
and to help sell services. I expect to be CCDP, CCSP, CCNP, and
Linux+ within the next 6 months, in that order. I'm one or two tests
towards each of the CCxPs now.
