I just acquired a 2500 Series(2501) Cisco router for training for ccna and
it will not allow me to send a break sequence. No matter what I do it
always only shows this:

System Bootstrap, Version 5.2(8a), RELEASE SOFTWARE
Copyright (c) 1986-1995 by Cisco Systems

I think I have tried everything and this is all I can get. I tried all the
break commands I could find, moved around the 2 jumpers. I have reseated
the Flash Dimm and the Memory. I have no idea what to try next. Anyone
have any suggestions. Thanks in advance for any help.

There's no need to move any jumpers around. Ditch Hyperterm and use
Tera Term. 8N1, *NO* flow control.

Does it come up if you don't hit break?

It takes longer to boot than you might think. Try powering it up and
letting it be for a good 10 minutes. I think mine takes over 3 minutes.

Well its been 15 minutes, no luck still just this:

System Bootstrap, Version 5.2(8a), RELEASE SOFTWARE
Copyright (c) 1986-1995 by cisco Systems

I am just starting ccna so I really have no idea what I am doing but i've
tried every break combo possible. I know computers just getting in to
routers though(Off to bad start). I've Downloaded the newest HyperTerminal
and Tera Term and still same damn. thing. I've tried every damn combo of
break commands and still same thing. I have reseated the Flash DIMM and
Memory and tried it with the 2 jumpers in every combo possible. It must be
fried or something huh? I don't know if this helps but here is the diagram
of the exact model and the exact same way the chips are in.

nothing to do with it. I found it cheap on eBay so maybe ill buy it, but if

Hi,

If by my experience if it was the DRAM it might have been EDO RAM (modern 70
Pin). It usually stops at the bootstrap when this is encountered.

If it was the DRAM, the type to use is "fast page" the older 70 pin stops as
you found out at the bootstrap. (silently fails the memory test)

If you need ram goto www.kg2.com they have it pretty cheap...

Otherwise, you need 72-pin TRUE Parity... and you will be good to go...

Hi,

If by my experience, if it was the DRAM it might have been EDO RAM (modern
70 Pin). It usually stops at the bootstrap when this is encountered.
(silently fails the memory test)

2500 series has one DRAM slot on its own and two flash slots adjacent to
each other.

If it was the DRAM, the type to use is "fast page" the older 70 pin.

DRAM spec usually fast page "FPM", true parity, 70 nS tin plated contacts.

If it was the flash memory it is possible that you have flash memory which
is not supported by your boot ROMs.

The original flash chip types were intel. If different look at the bootrom
version.

Cure in this case is to get appropriate flash memory types or upgrade boot
ROMs

About now you should try a "show version" command.

This will give you how much RAM is on the system, how much flash memory is on
the system and through the config register value, where the IOS is running
from.

If you have no DRAM at all the router probably would not run.

If you have no DRAM module you might have 2 MB DRAM soldered onboard. This
will be reported as 1MB/1MB in the "show version" output with no DRAM
module.

If you have no flash the router may have defaulted to the limited ROM IOS.
This will be indicated by the config register setting in the "show version
report being 0x2101, not the usual 0x2102.

"Show flash" would also be a useful command to try. It gives much useful
information on a 2500 series router.
