Is Todd Lammle a CCIE?
|
|
| dll2002dll 2003-12-17, 10:24 am |
| Hello,
It might not be much of a interest to a lot of people, but I am just
curious that whether Todd Lammle a CCIE or not?
I remember reading in some of his books that he had taken the CCIE
written exam and appearing for the CCIE lab exam, may be 2 years ago,
wondering what happened?
Note: With all due respect Todd Lammle is a great instructor and
excellent author.
Hey Todd are u listening?
Thanks.

|
| He is not.
Does it matter? Jeff Doyle isn't a CCIE either and he wrote some of the
more important CCIE training books. Doyle was a CCIE but he elected not to
recertify after he decided to work for a certain competitor of Cisco who
shall remain unnamed.

He was by the time he wrote his great books. I'm not implying that his
books would be worse if he wasn't, however I'm not implying the
opposite.

This competitor's name is a secret? It is not a the most well kept

Well, last time I mentioned their name on a Cisco forum, there was quite the
wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Shhh. You don't want the Cisco secret police knocking on your door.

I thought he left Juniper. I also heard that Tony left.

| Who gives a damn? As long as he knows what he's talking about and is good at what he does. I've used his books and they're good, CCIE or not.
Quit focusing on the certs folks, and focus on the experience. Too many of you have the CCNE certification (Cisco Certified No Experience, a.k.a "paper cert"), so certifications are meaning less and less nowadays anyway. | |

Tony left years ago.

I was talking about leaving Juniper. Is that what you meant? If so, I
didn't know he left that long ago.

Umm, Li left Juniper over 3 years ago.

In some respects it does. You know me well enough to know that the
following point is a general statement, not an absolute. It is
typical fare in almost all educational circles that you have attained
at least the next highest degree (or credential) before you teach at a
given level. So to teach an any primary educational institution, you
have a secondary educational degree. To teach at the secondary level
you would have a masters or most likely a PhD. Not that it
necessarily is an absolute requirement to being a good teacher, but
the system is there for a reason.
In some respects the system is there to boost the confidence of
students (would you want to go to a college if you knew that all of
the professors were 22 year old graduates?), but in other respects it
is a quality control mechanism to ensure that the teacher has not only
mastered the level they are teaching but the level beyond it. And in
my course of study I know why that is. I didn't master calculus until
I had taken several courses far beyond calculus. I wouldn't be able
to master those more advanced classes without working at a masters
level. Now sure I could do that on my own self study, but who is
there to prove that I did if I don't have a masters?
So there is a reason you might want someone to have proven that they
have better credentials than the level they are instructing at. That
may or may not apply as much to this field, but I don't think it is
irrelevant either.

He was at the time, and he also worked for Cisco at the time. The
second credential by itself is important. As an insider, he has much
more access to detailed technical information. I know from working at
a vendor that this access cannot be understated. There is no way that
a random outside person could ever know the products like I do. And
so I would have every advantage (in terms of technical knowledge of
subject matter) over someone like a Todd Lammle in writing a book or
teaching a class. I may not however be as good a writer or a teacher,
which are also important skills.
