Author CCNA 607 vs 801?
~ XO ~

2003-10-27, 12:25 am

Hi all,

I am new to the group, how are you all? :-)

I've been working with Cisco Routers for years and I have planned on doing CCNA before the expiration of 607.. Now I bought the book
and some other study material but it seems like the world has changed..

I have read the FAQ (Thanks for the detail info) and it mentioned about the expiration, but any idea what's the main changes except
it's going to be two parts? Is there a big change on the exam questions?

Thanks in advance, any input would be appreciated :-)

Regards,
XO

Anyone know when the last chance is to take the 607 before it becomes
obsolete?

I am studying for the 607 at the moment.

The last date to sign up was September 30, 2003.

I don't get it. Am I now studying for a exam that no longer exists? I had a
look on the Cisco website but I was unable to tell what the differnce was
between the two exams.

I have a Subex book for the CCNA 640-607, I only got it three weeks ago.
Don't tell me I have to splash out another $115 for a new book already.

Is there much differnce between the two exams. Is it worth continuing to
study with a book for the 607 if I now have to take the 801 exam?

To all,

Unless you are with a NetAcademy, you won't be able to register for the
exam. Here are the major changes to the CCNA exam:
* OSPF
* EIGRP
* VLSM
* NAT
* DHCP
* ISDN PRI
* 2950 (IOS-based) switches
* Heavy emphasis on troubleshooting

The core of the 640-801 exam is still the same material covered in the
640-607. So you didn't really throw your money away. Just use Cisco's web
site to brush up on these topics.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

Thanks for that info. It's little disheartening when you think you could
write an entire book on each of the subjects below. Presumably just the
basics need to be studied?

Does this means that 1900 switches are out, and 2950 switches are now on the

Pastypies,

That's correct--I'd know the basics, and some of the basic config commands.
Details on these subjects are reserved for the CCNP.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

Boro,

That's a good question. Currently, Cisco's 5-day course curriculum cover
BOTH switches; so I would assume that both switches are fair game on the
CCNA exam. For the CCNP switching, Cisco has forgone the 1900 since it is
EOL and only covers the native IOS-based switches, like the 2950, 3550,
4000, and 6500. My guess is that many training partners and NetAcademies
whined about the upgrade to 2950s for the CCNA, so Cisco kept them in this
time around; however, I would assume that the next rev of the CCNA will
probably elimiate this from the exam material--but you never know :-)

Cheers!

Richard,
First, let me say "Thank You" for all of the valuable information you
provide this group. It is appreciated.

I currently have a pair of 2501's and a 1912EN. I plan to add an
IOS-based switch before tackling the CCNA. I have been looking at the
2950s, but they seem to be quite expensive. I have also been looking
at the EOL 2924s. As they are EOL, they are quite a bit cheaper.

Would the 29xx (specifically the 2924XL with Enhanced Software) be an
acceptable substitute for the 2950?

Thanks ~ David Jones
