Have a question on subnetting Class A addresses.
I didn't notice any errata, and I did pick up the book used, but I think I
may have noted a small error in the chapter on subnetting in the Sybex book,
by Mr. Lammle. When discussing subnetting Class B addresses, he states the
the first subnet for a 255.255.255.224 masked address is going to be 0.32.
This makes sense to me, because we are using 13 bits for subnetting, and so
the first subnet would be at 00000000.00001000. However, when discussing a
class A address, he consistently starts the first subnet at 1 in the second
octet. For instance, for 255.255.255.192 (Class A) he starts off at
10.1.0.64, for the first subnet. To my mind, we just burned a good number of
subnets here and IP's here. . Wouldn't we want our first subnet to be at
00000000.00000000.01000000, and not at 00000001.00000000.00000000?
