| Hi,
I have seen an Ebay item with very little details
You are bidding on a used cisco 1900 series switch.
This comes complete with 24 10Mb ports and 2 100Mb ports.
Would the be suitable for a home lab? Starting with CCNA but
hoping to go all the way. Any ideas what one should pay as a
maximum for such an item?

This is probably the same switch that was initially included in
the CCNA bundle available to different schools.
Just be careful it includes the Enterprise Edition software
without which you will not be able to create VLANs.
As to the price, sorry I can't help you !

You could email the seller and ask for a few more details, particularly the
version of software it is running .
Some of the early 1900's were quite a different beast than is currently
available and they ran (from memory) software version 5.x (WS-C1900)and if
they are upgradable to Enterprise software I don't know if there's a way to
save the old IOS from flash. (so you might end up with a nice door stop)
They also don't have an RJ-45 console port but RS232 (DB9)
Physically they are a lot deeper than the current models and I don't think
there is an option for TFTP upgrade (X-modem maybe??)
Maybe someone else can remember.
Current going prices on Ebay in AUS are $300-500 for the newer models so one
of these would be worth spending a few extra bucks on.
BTW you can configure vlans with standard software but the Enterprise
edition would be more useful to you.

An 1900 switch is able to create vlans? Is there really a firmware-version
for 1900 switches, which is able to deal with vlans? I know that from the
3500 switches (and maybe from 2900), but not from 1900 ...
These type of switches (cisco 1900) don't have ios-like" firmware and i
never heard of "enterprise edition firmware" which can handle vlans for
these type of switches.

An 1900 switch is able to create vlans? Is there really a firmware-version
for 1900 switches, which is able to deal with vlans? I know that from the

| There are different "types" of 1900 switch. I don't know the numbers, but
there's on that comes with an IOS which provides no console access
(configuration can only be done via the menu system).
The Enterprise version allows console access and most certainly VLAN
configurations. I use them for the CCNA and CCNP courses.
