Author Value of CCDA?

I was just answering another post about the CCDA certificate being mailed
out and it occured to me that I may want to try and attain that
certification (only one more to go for CCNA, so I thought I'd try CCDA
afterwards.)

Anyway, how valuable do you all think the certification is? I primarily am
a network administrator, but am about to deploy my 2nd huge Cisco network.

Probably will try and change jobs in about a year. Something management
related (IT manager, director of IT.) Any opinions to whether I should
pursue CCDA/CCDP later or go towards the security certs?

Just curious, guess I am having one of those what should I do with the rest
of my life days....

Robert,

Value of certificates, any certificates is highly questionable. That
said in todays job market from my perspective, all certs are somewhat
valuable.

This appears to be somewhat contradictory but I can explain.

I was recently a victim of downsizing. In my arrogance, I had never
bothered to get certified, I reasoned that I was doing work that was
challenging and normally bleeding edge type stuff, any employer would
be able to see that I had the experience, smarts, and know how, to get
the job done on time and to the budget.

Besides I often had mates that had got themselves certified calling me
to ask questions on how to do such and such... thus in my mind
rendoring the certification as a somewhat useless annoyance.

Then I lost my cushy little job, Agents were hopeless, either not
returning calls or saying, wow lots of experience but where's your
CCXX, Thus rendoring the certs valuable again as the agents and their
customers are able to pick and choose in fact have too just to limit
the number of potential candidates they can see.

The reason I went and got the CCDA was because its a requirement of
CCDP which is only one test after you've done CCNP, I honestly don't
understand why more people don't have the cert, Especially after
they've put the effort into Getting CCNP.

Just my opinion

From my perspective, it's a matter of what you want to do. The Design
track (CCDA, CCDP) focus more on designing and engineering rather than
installing and supporting (speaking of CCDA and CID tests). I have
beend designing and building Internetworks for about 3 years, so
Design track is important and applies directly to what I do.

As far as gaining certification levels, the CCDA as well as CCNA are
required for the CCDP, where only the CCNA is a requirement for the
CCNP. So the CCDP is really a matter of two additional tests (CCDA
and CID) which is why I believe more people to not persue it, as well
as it is not as common a buzz-word with the PHB (pointy haired bosses)
as the CCNP. Most people look at me funny when I say I have my CCDA
and am working on my CCDP. Usual response is "What is that?"

Hopefully this gives you some insight, but it is really up to the
direction you want to take.
