Author ISDN Crossover cable...
Jonathan

2002-08-27, 4:28 pm

I heard that there was a method of using a crossover cable to connect two
BRI U ports together (so you wouldn't need a Simulator)... It wouldn't dial,
but it would bring the interfaces up and pass traffic...

Is there such a thing?

I believe no way, cause electrical signals are totally different, as I
was told when I asked the same kind of thing to very experienced people.
So no way without a PABX (may be very cheap) or an ISDN simulator (won't
be cheap), I believe.

Best regards.

I think there's a way with the new VIC based ISDN cards. See the
comp.dcom.sys.cisco's FAQ for more info.

Yes, you will be slightly mistaken :-) .
Hansang Bae already quoted that some rather high end ports on core
catalysts could do it with some configuration, I don't remember clearly,
but it was about 3/4 weeks ago.
But there is really another way, a Teles 4S0 BRI ISA card for PC
computer, the cheapest way by far, about 150 U.S.$ without shipping,
look on german EBay (pages.ebay.de). This is what I use presently, works
perfectly with DSS1 (Euro-ISDN or basic-net3) and german 1TR6 protocols.
You have to setup a german software, but it is very basic and remains
easy, and nothing will be cheaper.

Best regards.

And what will be worse, MS-DOS driver will have to be setup in german too.
But with a little help from our Cisco newsgroup friends, especially the
ones from germany, perhaps we will be able to get the same drivers in
english. I have them in german only.
Luckily german people very often, almost always, speak english fluently,
so don't complain too much :-) .

All work, no trouble, the only difference is between the connector for
what is called I believe a VIPM interface (for communication between
heterogenous PBX), but we don't care. Get one of these cards, then the
driver, set it inside a PC with 16 bits ISA slots, and you're done.

Best regards.

I forgot a small tip : These are BRI (4S0) cards versions 2.6 and 2.8,
they can accomodate too PRI (3S2M) and analogical cards (4AB). The older
versions such as 1.5 can take either PRI or analogical, but not both at
the same time.

Best regards.
