| Thanks for the info and not to beat a dead horse let me get this
straight If we get your Routersim 3.1 software we can use it to do the
labs at the end of each chapter. and then all we need is the regular
version 3 of your book. Not the deluxe version.
Do you think it would be better other then from a financial point on
your part to get the deluxe book and your routersim 3.1 software and
do all of it, the labs for each chapter and also the appendix.
Are the two of them that different from each other. Can you do the
labs in the appendix with the routersim 3.1 software or are they
strictly geared for the sim software that comes with the book.
And last is the regular book good enough to pass the ccna test with or
is the deluxe that much better.
I'm just trying to make an informed decision on my purchases that will
benefit me the most in my studying
Thanks again

| Before you seem to have a need to open your mouth why don't you get
your facts straight. I don't know what he has or has not done in the
past as I am new to this group. All I can say is he posted a message
about the release of his new edition. Granted it was just spam to get
people to buy his book. I asked him a question on 6/21/2002 - 7:33 pm
and I got a reply back from him on 6/22/2002 - 10:47 am. I probably
won't get an answer this time but again as being new to this group I
can only base what I do as to my own observations.
Also what difference does it make to you anyway??? The message wasn't
addressed to you.
Thanks for your input

Well, then I can only assume that being *new* you would be open to
hearing the experience of those of us that have been around this group
since its *VERY BIGINNING*?!?! I guess not, so if you need future
help understanding something like OSPF point-to-multipoint, I guess
you can screw yourself then, lol.

Ok, I missed *one* other day when he posted. A google search reveals
that as of March this year (probably when a buddy told him about
Usenet, lol) he first started marketing his stuff in here. Two
consecutive days in March he posted spam (that is what I saw from
him). While he was spamming us, he replied to another post telling
someone to buy his sim, so apparently when he spams he bothers to read
a couple of posts to see if something catches his eye. On June, there
was a thread that had escaped my notice, in which he spammed and then
bothered to check back to see if anyone replied to his spam. This is
the thread you were referring to. So I stand corrected on the
technical detail of whether he posted once or twice in three years,
and now I have my facts straight (happy?). So that makes a big,
whopping two days of contribution from him! That must make him a big
player in here!

Ummm, you post in a public forum and you don't expect anyone to read
it?!?!? Especially when you put neon lights around your subject like
you did?!?!? If you wanted to only address it to a *specific person*,
you should have emailed him using the address he posts with.

| First off I am not trying to have any issues with anybody in this
group it just sounded to me like you were flaming me like I was stupid
or something for posting a request to Todd. Again i'm new to this
group and can only base my actions on my observations.

| Bernie, I respect your response because you are right that I don't
hang out here because I usually get flammed by someone like yourself.
Although, I consider your post possibly different because you said
you've been here from the beginning. If that is true, great, I respect
your dedication. Hopefully you are using your time and efforts to help
people, although you did come down pretty hard on the new person to
the group, so I am not sure of your purpose here. Like you did for me,
I'll have to search the archives to see your other responses before I
make a decision about you.
Bascially, if I have new information or new books, I want people to
know and people ask me to tell them, and that is what I do here.
Unfortantly, I can't send a message to only those who want to hear it
so everyone gets it. I understand your frustration in my posting what
I did, but I need to tell you that people ask me to do this so they
stay informed.
Thanks for your time.
Cheers!

Maybe I was a little abrupt with my first response, but I wouldn't say
that I came down hard on anyone *until* I was told when or when not to
open my mouth. I have earned the right to open my mouth when I want
to, though I *do* try to get my facts straight before In regards to
initially being curt or abrupt or a little impatient with newbs, like
fine wine, that quality of mine has developed with time.
Two reasons: 1) One can only see the same questions asked so many
times without it driving one a little batty (now I am not saying that
Certified asked a repeat question--I am talking about newbs in
general). Since google archives still contain the answers to 99% of
the basic questions, it appears that most people that drift through
here are simply lazy.
2) 99% of the newbs come here, leach answers to all their basic
subnetting questions, and then never turn around and contribute back
to the group after they have gotten their paper. Others just want to
know where to get braindumps or trade CBTs that they don't own. That
also affects a persons attitude over the course of a few years.
In general, most newbs (not all) have made themselves the adversary
around here. Sometimes it is easy to get a little short with them,
even the ones that are here to genuinely learn.
So, no, I admit I am not as friendly as I used to be towards the
average newb. *But*, as anyone can attest, if a newb asks a question
about how some piece of technology (for example, ATM) functions, I am
usually very glad to explain things. I stopped answering the
questions about the more well understood subjects a while back, simply
because I want to maintain my sanity, and posting a tutorial on
subnetting every week is not conducive to that. I usually just stick
to telecom or other more obscure topics.

I do have some constructive comments about posting what equates to
spam. No one complains when people who regularly contribute to the
group mention that they sell stuff. Some people advertise in their
sig. The point is that it is not a big deal. People get more
offended when someone only posts information about things they are
selling, and then the level of irritation is proportional to the
frequency of the advertisement. Dr. Vincent Jones references his
books a lot in posts (in c.d.s.c), but he is also answering peoples'
questions. He sometimes takes a little heat for it, but more often he
is respected. I really don't think that if you contributed answers to
various questions about how stuff works that you would get lots of
flames. Conversely, if you only post answers to questions about your
books, it looks like you are only willing to sell answers to
networking questions in the form of your books. I can certainly
understand if you don't have time for this type of activity. I am
just informing you of how it *appears* to people when you have time to
promote your books, but you don't have time to go over route
redistribution one more time. It is a matter of balance.
If I had been really bothered by your previous posts, I would have
reported you to your ISP. Anyway, I don't make a big deal out of spam
if it is a one or two time thing. I only referred to your previous
posts as spam because that is pretty much what they were whether or
not someone asked you to post it, or you had a good reason, or
whatever. I think I also extended more latitude to you because you
created what you are selling. It is a lot more irritating when some
middle man comes here to sell "training CD's" for $100 that were
bought from Cisco for $5 (and are not really training CD's in the
first place). I am sure someone will get my reference...

Because the newbs come and go, but the regulars are interesting
people. If you will notice, I pretty much ignore the newbie type
questions for the most part such as "what order should I take the
exams", "which are the best practice tests", "which cbt's are best",
"where can I get a braindump", etc. Those newbs that decide to stick
around (and graduate to non-newb status) eventually start asking "what
is the difference between isis and ospf", "what is atm ces", "i don't
understand the difference between a t1 and pri", etc. Those are the
questions I tend to read and respond to. That is where I derive
enjoyment from this group.
If I forced myself to read every post that comes through this group, I
would have gone insane long ago...so filtering out certain types
questions is my sanity preservation mechanism.

| Bernie, the problem that I have in this group is the damn servers are
so slow! That drives me nuts. I can't get in during the day, or if I
do, I write a long response, only for the servers to time out. Plus,
the comments usually don't get posted for 24 hours! Or it seems like
that, anyway.
Other then that, I appreciate your comments and understand and share
your frustations.
Please understand that some people ask me to post when my new books
come out.
Cheers!

Does transedge have a newserver? You might be better off doing it with a
'local" nntp server than going through google.

If I had to use google to read and post, I would have given up a long
time ago. Does your local ISP have a news server? I'd try that. I
like the experience of Usenet *soooo* much better through an app like
Agent that can download all the headers, sort them how I like, read
the ones I want, and permanently delete the ones I don't want to read.
I hate OE for news because there is no way that I have found to get
rid of the messages that I don't want to read or have already read.
When I post, if my server times out, Agent has a copy in the Outbox,
which I can simply click to resend a little later. In fact, Agent is
a big part of why I am the NG junkie I am today, lol.
Let me know if you don't have access to a nntp server, and I'll try to
locate a public domain news server that carries this group and allows
posting. There are a couple of post-only nntp servers too. Just let
me know if you need me to try to look some of these up for you and I
will.

Oh also, I just want to point out to you, sllv521, that the above is
not my opinion; they are facts. 99% of the questions asked by newbs
are easily researched within about five minutes via a web browser and
either google or Cisco's web sites. 99% of the people that come here
asking questions never answer questions for others once they have
gotten their own questions answered. Ok, maybe it is not 99%, perhaps
95%. Regardless, it is easy to show that the vast majority of people
that come through here fit the above profile. This group is no
different in this respect. The same could be said for any NG. But I
still love Usenet.
