| I would think that you would want to know IPX just to know it. There are a
lot of Novell shops still out there, and that would still be a handy bit of
knowledge to have...

| IMHO, most Novell shops now do IP.

Smaller shops can switch to IP easily. Bigger sites cannot. But NetWare is
fast becoming a footnote in networking history. I say that as an ardent
NetWare fan. I've used NW since 2.15 days (compsurf/ztest anyone?)

| I think with the pass rate at the 85% mark that to go in the exam with no
understanding of IPX/SPX at all would be foolish, you can only get around 7
questions wrong and an otherwise easy IPX one could come back to haunt you.
It would take you all of 2 hours to get a brief knowledge of IPX and its
ACL's, services, addressing scheme (it only the MAC plus some other digits!)
etc. and it could be the difference between a pass or fail. If you really
cant take anymore knowledge into the exam with you or your head will
explode, I suppose you could give it a miss as its not an very important
area. Just cos some ppl got lucky with no q's doesnt mean you will, there
are selections from over 2000 q's or so I have been told.
just my 2p

| Hi Hansang and all,
Isn't it true that since versions of NW 5.1 and 6 now use IP as a
native protocol it makes little sense to keep the IPX suite going?
cisco probably just recognizes that even in a NW world IP is the
protocol of choice now and there is no compelling reason to maintain
subject matter that is rare at the router infrastructure level where
cisco people operate mostly. Of course, IPX is far more secure than IP
and having IP coming in to a firewall with IPX communicating behind it
on the servers makes a very secure domain.
I agree that NW is scarce, but it does have its adherents and maybe
will grow once again with the new Console One and its functionality.
We certainly need the variety.

Boy, you've been away for a while eh? The problem is that to it's
prohibitively difficult to switch so many users and servers in an
enterprise. That's why IPX will be around for a long long time to come.

| Terry,
Money does not grow on trees. Novell might now have switched to IP for
their newest releases but there are literally thousands upon thousands of
Novell networks out there - most companies will not entertain the idea of
scrapping IPX on existing roll-outs - it will cost big $$$$ £££££. Why scrap
something that works perfectly well when corporate finances are tight ?
IPX will be around for a long time to come and any network engineer worth
his/her salt should get to grips with basic Novell very quicky indeed. It's
true that IPX has been removed even from the CCIE lab exam. However, you
need to know plenty about this important protocol to get through the CCIE
written test.
Regards,
Steve

| Very sensible Gary. As you say, you could get a couple of very simple
Mickey Mouse IPX questions. Get 'em wrong and that's two out of your seven
wrong allowed.
