Has anyone (recently) drawn any comparisons between the MS practice exams
from
Transcender and MeasureUp?

These are very similar. I've used Transcenders a lot, but I've looked
at MeasureUp. These cover the same material, but the questions are
different.

I really like to descriptions of the answer choices that both companies
give you. This helps you learn. You don't just need to know why the
right answer is right, but you also need to know why the other answers
are wrong.

Sometimes more than 1 answer is right, but one is "more right" than the
others - this usually means that one answer is more efficient in terms
of memory or network bandwidth.

Pay close attention to the questions - sometimes they want you to
implement the quickest solution for you to develop, and other times
they want the solution that is most efficient at runtime.

If you can afford it, get both of these.

But I would stay away from the Transcenders Flash Cards. They seem to
be of little value.

Eric, thanks for the response. Do you, or anyone else, have any comments on
the following questions?

o cost/content

What is the cost/question ratio? Is this a valid metric?

o coverage

Who covers more exams?

o availability

Which company normally makes it first to market when a new exam is released?

This is pretty subjective. It's hard to say which one is the better
deal. Most of us only use one of these companies.

Transcenders covers all of the main exams for MCSD.NET. They may not
cover some of the electives (like BizTalk?). Check their web site for
their current offerings.

Transcenders has updates you can D/L for free. I'm not exactly sure
what changes they make each time - they don't give you a summary of
changes made each time. They also don't add new questions very often.

I don't know enough about MeasureUp to be helpful.

I have used Selftestsoftware practise exams and found them to be a great
comparison when used in conjunction with Measureup's practise tests.

Generally I use selftestsoftware practise exams, and when I have scored well
in those I take the measure up exams. Both are good in their own right but
using them together has prepared me well for exam day in both 291 and 293.
Using 2 independants helps avoid parrot repetition and question learning.

I think the metrics Neil has used are a good baseline to work on when
deciding which option to use, I also always look out for update frequencies
also. I also agree with Neil on Flash Cards, flash cards are great for one
liner quick fix knowledge answers but are crap when you need to work out
concepts.
In terms of coverage, it really depends what you are studying for -
Selftest cover Cisco,MS, Linux and a host of others, not sure about
Measureup though.

On more cautionary point, you are in for a long haul study period on a
particular exam it is vital to be constantly aware that you are not simply
learning the answers to a given question - but you are in fact testing your
knowledge.

Hope this helps

I've used both Transcender and Measureup. For me, the Transcenders
have been much better. The questions seem to be closer to what the
actual exam asks. More, the explanations are clearer. Neither will
give the actual questions, but often by understanding the answers
(both correct and incorrect) you'll have both a solid understanding of
the test requirements, and the material.

I've only done two tests, 70-210 and 70-290, using the selftestsoftware
practice tests. Most things on the actual test were on the proctice tests,
though. So far I'm happy with the results. Once I get into some of the
harder tests, though, I think I'll get a better feel for how accurate the
selftest software is.
