I have a Dell Dim4400 with approx 18 CB hard drive which
was becoming overloaded. I recently installed a 80 GB
drive and transferred bulky photo, video etc to the new
drive freeing up 50% of the C drive.
I believe partioning the drives provides better speeds
and management.
I do not understand the concept and cannot find specific
info on the subject.
Can anybody advise of the strategy and practical
application of partitioning?

Ron,

The thing to keep in mind here is that in just about every MS OS, the two
locations that are going to get accessed the most are your %systemroot% and
your page file. I recommend moving the page file off of the same drive as
your %systemroot% once you are satisfied with the stability of the system.

There is a big difference between two drives and two partitions. In a lot of
cases, if you have two partitions and one drive, you really aren't going to
gain any performance by merely partitioning and moving things around. In
that case, you're typically better off with a single, defragmented
partition. If you have two distinct drives, however, that's a horse of a
different color. That's where you can get a definite improvement in
performance by separating out page files, program files and data into
different locations.

Did this help?
