Author MCDBA at last!
Bob Montgomery

2004-02-26, 6:24 pm

Well, I finally wrapped up my MCDBA by passing 70-216
yesterday. I've invested a lot of time on this over the
past 5 months; I've learned a lot; and I personally found
it worthwhile.

I must agree with the others who have said that 70-216 is
really a beast. I put in twice as much time preparing for
70-216 compared to the other exams and felt that I was
very well prepared, but I was surprised by the difficulty
as well as the content to some extent.

It covered all of the things I expected, but there were
more questions on Certificate Authority than I really
wanted to see and there was very little on routing or
subnetting which was disapointing because I'd spent a lot
of time on those subjects.

At any rate, I'm glad that this is behind me. Now I'm
going to try for the CCNA and hoping that some of what I
learned in preparing for 70-216 will help on that.

At some point I'd like to get my MCSA so I may go ahead
and try to get 70-218 out of the way while all this
networking stuff is still fresh in my mind.

Anyway, thanks to everyone here who helped along the way!

Congratulations! Good luck with the CCNA- their pass rate is high, and
the questions are both mundane/difficult. There is very little
similarity between CCNA and mcse- MCSE focuses on microsoft products,
such as DNS and DHCP, while CCNA is mostly switch/router commands, OSI
layers, etc.

I passed the CCNA, found it to be quite difficult. I took it before the
microsoft exams, so it's harder to compare, but MS seems a breeze after
that one. If you found 216 a beast, watch out.

I recommen you get a good book, really study it, and practice A LOT on a
real switch or sims. Good luck!

Kat,

Thanks!

I'm planning on using "CCNA Certification Library (CCNA
Self-Study, exam #640-801), Sixth Edition" along with
Transcender to prepare for the Cisco exam. The reviews on
Amazon were pretty positive for the most part.

I'm also toying with the idea of picking up a used
Catalyst 5000 because they can be had for less than $500
on ebay these days which isn't that much more than a
license for Boson NetSim.

A real router seems like the better buy I found the CCNA much more
straight forward, can't say if it was that much harder than MS but I thought
it was more well rounded and CCNA is nice in that it is much tougher to read
cheap braindumps and pass it as you have to do sims on the exam.

Passing the CCNA exam without having at least a couple of routers and a
couple of switches, or a sim that will allow you to build networks using
routers and switches in a variety of scenarios is going to be pretty
difficult. Several of the questions I had on my test related to things you
will only come across in troubleshooting connection problems, and in a test
in which you must have 85% or better to pass to through away 10% - 15% of
possible answers by not preparing sufficiently makes it hard to pass. You
better hope you won't miss anything outside of the hands on portions of the
test if you want to pass using only one router.

Besides, even if you do pass that way you'll still be a "paper" CCNA. You
won't be prepared to function in the real world.

Gary,

I've been thinking about this and agree with you about needing multiple
routers or a good simulator.

The CCNA INTRO book from Cisco Press came with the LE version of Netsim
and I've already purchased the upgrade and working it has helped me to
get a handle on what I need to know for the INTRO exam. And, I expect
that it will be even more useful in preparing for the ICND.

Anyway, I spent this week reading the CCNA INTRO book and working with
Netsim helped a lot. And, right now I'm expecting to take the INTRO
exam on Friday.
