I have never messed with sql server but I need to implement
it into my Senior Project for school. I am merging to
corportations upgrading the existing NT structure to and
windows 2000 active directory forest with many sites. All
i really need to know is if i need an SQL server at every
site for a fast response to client queries or do i just
need one at headquarters?

Depends on your connection, you might want to have a headquarters standard
or enterprise SQL Server with versions of MSDE at the remote locations. You
can find lots of info at www.microsoft.com/sql
