Hi there,

I have a simple question or two on the SQL Server 2000
Admin Self-Paced Training Kit (the book). I just bought
the 2nd edition of this book, and while reading the
requirements I noticed that it says I need to run the SQL
Server 2000 evaluation software on Windows 2000 Server.
This is not included on the CD-ROM!!

My current job is not related to SQL Server and does not
use Windows 2000 Server. I am reading this book at home
on my home PC (WinXP Pro). How am I supposed to do the
examples in the book if they didn't include the required
operating system Windows 2000 Server (even an evaluation
version) on the CD-ROM??

Is it ok to just use my home PC's WinXP Pro? Or are the
book examples specifically designed to run on WINDOWS
2000 SERVER?

Also, as I am only just starting to study for the MCDBA,
does anyone out there think it's wiser to start with the
third exam on Microsoft's MCDBA page, "Core Exam:
Networking Systems" which is an operating system exam?

Or should I start with the first exam on Microsoft's
MCDBA page, "Core Exam: SQL Server Admin"? It seems like
starting at the bottom by studying an operating system
makes more sense than starting with the RDBMS?

Thanks a million!

You can get a trial / preview kit for Windows 2003 Server or when you get
the Self-Paced Training Kit
for 70-215 Win2k Server, it will contain an eval of
Windows 2000 Server.

Also, you can get the personal edition of SQL from here which works fine on
XP

On your question of the order to take exams, I would go with what you are
most comfortable with first (especially if this will be your first time
taking MS exams). Coming out with a victory on your first exam is a great
feeling whereas struggling with your first one and not passing can be quite
enervating.
