Hello,

Can anyone recommend good SQL Server 2000 book/material that is
comprehensive yet an easy read that also serves a good background to the
70-228 and/or 70-229 exams. I'm not a DBA (more of systems/network admin),
so I
want to concentrate on 70-228 first. I also want to KNOW SQL Server, not
questions and answers to the test(s). Any help on this will be appreciated.
I
can be e-mailed @ cgracia AT optonline DOT com

Thanks

Cruz

I've glanced through the "Dummies" book for the 70-228. I didn't really read
it since I'm not going for the cert, but it seemed like a pretty clear and
easy-to-read introductory text.

If you really want to *KNOW* SQL Server, pick up a copy of Kalen Delaney's
excellent "Inside SQL Server 2000." Highly recommended!

How comprehensive is Inside SQL Server? I was checking that and the Osbourne
book and seemed to see more negative reviews than positive. I opted for the
MSPress 70-228 book (2nd Edition) and am hoping for the best. It just came
out, and figured anything that was wrong in the first edition was probably
corrected in the second. Hopefully I didn't waste any money. I really just
want to learn SQL primarily and then go for the cert in a month or two (if I
feel I learned enough from the book I bought, I'll buy a transcender and
find out).

I have to say that I disagree with most of Amazon.com's comments on Inside
SQL Server 2000...the book is very comprehensive (as one comment said, "too
comprehensive"...if there is such a thing).

Yes, a lot of of the information is available in Books Online, but only
because Books Online is also a very good reference. I _strongly_ doubt that
the people who posted those comments know SQL Server as well as Kalen
Delaney (or even as well as someone who has really studied her book). It
always impresses me how many of the questions on the
microsoft.public.sqlserver* newsgroups I can answer with the knowledge I
gained from her book.

No, I don't know her...and no, I don't work for MS Press...I just really
like the book.

Cruz:

Print out the test requirements from www.microsoft.com/mcp.
I found the following helpful understanding the exam topics and goals.

-Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Unleashed, SAMS, ISBN: 0-672-31997-7
-SQL Server's Help, Books Online
-Web articles. Do a search for the topic you are studying for and see
what tutorials you find online.

I have attended some of Kalen's conference sessions and
read her book and I must say I reccomend both!

Ray Higdon MCSE, MCDBA, CCNA

And yes, Amazon reviews for her book are bullshit

MsPress 2nd edition ?!?!? Do you mean the blue version with the vue
deiscount vouchers and readiness review just like the ones for 70-215 and
70-216?

I just bought the "old" versjon of 70-228, I didn't think there would be any
2nd edition... Is there a 2nd edition for 70-229 as well?

I did see something for vouchers, but to answer your question, yes. The
publishing I believe was very recent (May of this year)

I printed out the objectives and will begin some of the studying tonight.
Man I'm excited.... I'm sure I will have questions soon. If anyone has
any further suggestions on how to proceed with my self-training of SQL
Server 2000, I'm all eyes and ears. Thanks
