| Mac K. 2003-03-04, 7:23 pm |
| Hi All!
I've recieved an email from MCP Mag saying that I am eligible for a "FREE"
print or digital subscription. The email is reproduced below:
--------------------------------------------------
Dear MCP,
You've worked hard for your Microsoft credentials. Now it's time to take
advantage of a valuable certification benefit -- your subscription to
Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine.
Each month you'll get timely news and analysis about changes to
Microsoft's certification program, as well as practical information on
managing Windows networks, securing your systems, scripting, Active
Directory, Windows Server 2003, and professional development.
Best of all, it's free to all Microsoft Certified Professionals! We'll
deliver a digital edition of MCP Magazine to you, no matter what part of
the world you live and work in. You pay neither subscription expense or
mail fee.
This digital edition of the magazine contains everything you'd find in the
print version, plus more!
* Jump directly to the articles you want.
* Search within each issue by keyword, author or title.
* Hotlink to related Web sites directly.
* Zoom in on every aspect of an article.
* Forward the issue easily to colleagues.
* Receive special content available only to digital edition subscribers.
* Quickly and efficiently save and archive issues to your computer for
reading anywhere, anytime.

| It's only free if you live in North America. Otherwise you have to pay for
shipping. I did but I wish I hadn't because it sucks. You can learn all you
need to know from this very newsgroup, and from me in particular.

| The MCP Mag is not affiliated with Microsoft, so any complaint you have is
not with Microsoft, I would suggest you email the editor of the magazine and
ask for clarification on this issue.

Hmm, well it was a while ago when I asked for my subscription and I had to
pay a few dollars shipping fee (I live in Scotland) so maybe the policy has
changed. Pop off an email to the mag in question.

| I got that e-mail too. I tried to subscribe and did not put in my credit
card details. Same error message as yours. I just wasted my time, and maybe
gave too much personal info. Junk mails coming... On the other hand, maybe
it is a validation mistake on the Web site.

I think you've got it there. Which is more likely, that a US based publisher
did not properly test registration for their new PDF subscription option for
foreign subscribers, or they are actively trying to deceive people into
paying for something after claiming it's free or giving personal information
without having to deliver a subscription to them?
I'd still contact them and give them a ration of crap about it, but I'd bet
anything that it's just a dumb mistake on their part.

| I've been receiving the online and printed version of MCPmag since I passed
my first exam more than two years ago. I don't however recall having to
give any credit card info. In fact I'm certain that I didn't because I
wouldn't have gone any further. I clicked the link provided below and
didn't notice anything suspicious. Perhaps where it ask if you hold one of
the certs you accidentally clicked no in which case you may be required to
pay.

Which link exactly are you talking about. The link I've provided in this
thread DID ask about Credit Card details.

| Just select US from the first page - you don't get asked for Credit Card
details then.
