Exam 229 without course

| Hi, just wondering if anyone has sat and passed exam 229
without doing the course. I am thinking about just
getting the Readiness Review doing self study. I don't
really have much experience with SQL (I am doing the
Admin course and exam in 2 weeks), but I do have someone
who can help (he is a programmer).
So, do you think the Readiness Review (plus probably
transcenders - I find it easier to learn concepts by
putting having them in questions) will be enough to get
the knowledge I require?
I have a server here i can play around on, so I wont be
going in without any 'hands on'.
The only reason I am thinking about sitting the exam
without sitting the course is that the course isn't being
run until late march and by then I will be away on
business and I was hoping to have my MCDBA before i went
away (presuming of course that I pass my up coming exams).
Boy, if I get through all this... in about 6 or 7 weeks I
will be MCSA, MCSE and MCDBA!! (I think I'll need to get
an extra large business card! LOL) Then I all I need to
do is go back to University and finish my IT degree I
left a couple of years ago!
TIA

| I passed all my exams (228, 229 and 3 .NET exams) without any course.
I heavily worked with SQL Server 2000 for about 9 months and studied many
books before I took the exams. I also used Transcender.
Danut, MCAD.NET (one left for MCDBA)

| I would imagine most people would not have taken any courses. If you
use the product day in day out, there in known need to take any
courses. Simply use the exam prep guide and research any topics you
are not sure on.

| I had originally taken 229 in Dec of 2001, at that point I had very little
experience with SQL Server 2000 (about 5 months on and off)... I think I
scored like 670-690... not quite enough for a pass. So a year later I had
taken it and did wonderfully.. I used transcender and SQL BOL included with
SQL Server for my studying. Stay away from Brain dumps... there are too many
that have variations of the same questions with different answers... it
would probably get confusing if you tried to memorize them all... then
you're just cheating yourself anyway.

I just took and passed 70-229 this morning (whew!). Once again,
Transcender saved the day. I truly believe that the best way to prepare
for this test is to alternate between taking Transcender practice tests
and then looking up things you missed or aren't sure of in Sql Server
Books Online. Then just print out your practice tests with all of the
answer explanations and study them along with any notes you took from
Books Online. That's all. Really.
Don't waste your time with the Readiness Review book, it's just not
focused enough on what you need to know. I spent hours on that book and
it contributed not at all to my passing the test. Nada, zip. Of
course, there are lots of great Sql books out there (like Inside Sql
Server), wonderful for improving your understanding of Sql Server, but
for the purposes of passing this test, I'm telling you ... Transcender
all the way.
Good luck!
