Will MCSD Credits Count?
|
|
| Jack Hyman 2003-01-18, 12:23 am |
| I currently have my MCP and am working towards an MCSD. I
will be taking the 70-175 and already passed the 70-229
exam for MCSD. Will MS lap my credits so that I only need
to take two more certs in order to become an MCDBA. Whats
the policy since I cannot seem to find it anywhere?
Thanks!

| Yes; for you 70-175 will count as an elective.
As side point, it always seems daft that 70-100 was not also an
effective for mcdba.

| Good point Allan, 70-100 is about 75% datamodelling IIRC (it's quite a long
time ago ;-). it should almost be a core exam for MCDBA really.

| I agree, instead of 70-215 I'm fighting now I would prefer 70-100.

| 70-215 should still be a mandatory core exam. But what fox pro
(elective) as to do with price of eggs, who knows!

| Apparently you can use Foxpro to write client aps for SQL Server just like
VB. Some people even use it, I heard, from someone, unreliable, somewhere,
some time ago... ;-)
70-215 should definitly stay as a core exam, but I wouldn't object to MS
adding 70-100 or the .NET equivalent to the MCDBA program. Or maybe I should
just get MCSD.NET as well.

The point being this is an dba cert, not development.

| Well, MS call it a dba exam, but from the content you can see that they
really haven't made up their mind.
I would like to see MS to dump the app development exams as an elective from
the MCDBA (so you got basically data warehousing and the networking exam
left), and a separate DB developer cert, that drops the Windows exams but
includes SQL Dev, SQL Admin, Analyzing requirements, a Distributed apps
exam, some XML and a real hard-core SQL programming exam where you fail the
moment you use dynamic sql or a cursor ;-)

| Well, I know some DBAs that do not really know to write good T-SQL code nor
to design or tune the database. That's why for database I had to use a
cursor in many case. They write triggers for several tables that assumed the
UPDATE was only for one record so I could not update more than one record at
a time.
BTW: Sometimes it is really frustrating to know too much. I studied a lot
for 229 and 228. Actually I wanted to learn more than just for exam. When I
got to work for that project I almost screamed every day. All the good
skills I gained were useless. Due to the poor database design and poor
maintenance everything war upside-down.

We have all been there. Today, I just laugh at it, especially at some
of the excuses I hear. Funny how many ways you can say 'We had no idea
what we were doing'!!!

This is the reason why businesses waste billions each year. Companies
do not understand that software is (or in many cases, should be)
engineered. Many companies have learnt nothing from the past, with
regards to the development of software, and still produce utter
rubbish in an attempt to 'save money' simple by cutting corners - the
result a serious waste of money.
There are simple too many cowboys out there, but while it is
'accepted', there will be no change.
One interesting thing I have noticed, is that one would have assumed
given the cut backs companies are having to make, they would use this
as a reason to invest in improving their processes in order to save
money. But No! They seem to be going further into the abyss.
