Author [OT] How Oracle cert. compares to MCDBA

I am studying for MCSA and MCDBA, which, I think, will atleast open up some
opportunity, and plus the fact that it is a nice combination of networking
and administration knowledge.

Just wondering how would people compare Oracle DBA certification to MS, in
regards to difficulty of exams?

TIA,
Tariq

I have both MCSEs and MCDBAs and still believe that the Oracle cert is
more credible.

Truth is it is more rounded that the MCDBA 7 and more techically
demanding than the MCDBA 2K

Seems like the general concensus, but I am surprised to not see any oracle
certification newsgroups. Am interested in recommendations about the books
to read to get certified.

Thanks for the replying.

I just took my first Oracle exam today - 1Z0-001 PL/SQL for 8i (and 8
originally). I thought it was very easy. I have no production Oracle
experience, I just installed it at home and read a few books out of the
bargain bin (one general, two related to the exam). I think it was a pretty
good exam, but definitely easier than the MS exams for SQL 7 or 2000. I
scored a higher percentage on this Oracle exam than on any of the SQL Server
exams going back to 6.5, and I've been doing full time production work with
SQL Server continuously since version 4.21.

One big cosmetic difference is that the Oracle questions are on average much
briefer than the average MS question. I was given 2 hours for 57 questions
and finished, with a review, in about 40 minutes. Partly because of this,
some of the Oracle questions are particularly unrealistic, but I think for
the most part they do require important skills to answer correctly.

The Oracle score sheet also includes more feedback than I've ever seen on an
MS exam. I got my score, plus a section breakdown - TWENTY THREE 'sections'
with from 1 to 4 questions each (there are only 57 questions total!). It
denotes how many questions were in each section and how many I got right.

I'll follow up with the next 4 Oracle exams starting in July, after doing a
couple of C# beta exams with MS. I look forward to a whole exam about
performance tuning, but I'm a little baffled at how the topic of backup &
restore, while critical, can constitute an entire exam. I think if MS did
that they'd get complaints of trying to make their cert more expensive.

Backup / Restore is arguably the most important function a dba will do. I
can see whole exam for performance tuning as well as Oracle does not self
tune, to the extent SQL server does. (From heresay, not personal experience
on performance tuning.)

I could argue that plugging in the server's power cord is even more
important. It would be difficult to fill an entire exam covering that skill,
though.

That's what I meant. It's vital, but does it really compare in breadth to
PL/SQL programming? I'll find out this summer.

I got my Oracle8i certification 2 years ago and DB2 certification this year.
I would say Oracle performance tuning exam is bit harder which needs more
real-world experience.

Go to pipetalk for Oracle and DB2 questions...

Cheers,
