| I've been trying to figure out why MCSE's don't take certain tests and get
their MCDBA at the same time. I've gone through the lists of cert tests,
and it seems to me that if you take a particular 7 MCSE tests, you'll
satsify everything for your MCDBA at the same time. Am I wrong in this?
Here's the list I've compiled:
1 70-210 W2K Professional MCSE
2 70-215 W2K Server MCSE MCDBA
3 70-216 W2K Network Infrastructure MCSE MCDBA
4 70-217 W2K Directory Services Infrastructure MCSE
5 70-221 Designing W2K Network Infrastructure MCSE
6 70-228 Administering Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
MCSE MCDBA
7 70-229 D & I Databases w/ Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise
Edition MCSE MCDBA
Seems to me that if you take these tests, and pass, you can end up with your
MCSE and DBA at the same time.
Anyone see a flaw in this logic?
Thanks!

| I guess you are right.
Here is what I have picked from the MS site and from your list in order to
make a MCDBA certification:
SQL Server Administration Exams (one required)
> 6 70-228 Administering Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition MCSE
MCDBA
SQL Server Design Exams (one required)
> 7 70-229 D & I Databases w/ Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
MCSE MCDBA
Networking Systems Exams (one required)
> 2 70-215 W2K Server MCSE MCDBA
Elective Exams (one required)
> 3 70-216 W2K Network Infrastructure MCSE MCDBA

| Does that seem right though? And if so, why are there so many more MCSE's
than there are MCDBA's? Do people just focus on other things, because
they'd need those skills for their particular jobs?
Just curious.

| Yes. A lot of people won't know a whole lot about SQL Server - and maybe
won't want to learn two exams worth (Systems Admin, and Design !) ...
They will be more comfortable with Exchange, etc - especially if used in
everyday life.
Now me, I have taken the SQL exams first - as that is my main interest - and
am trying to learn more about Win2K to see if I dare go for the DBA cert -
but I will certainly go for MCSE straight after with only 3 exams more to
take!

| That's correct Wade.... Except for your test #5, that's exactly what I've
done. I took 70-219 instead of 70-221. Additionally I took the IEAK exam
just to do it.
Many people aren't interested in SQL. And frankly, it is a REAL challenge.
Most SQL types have a bit of programmer in 'em. And many network admins
have no interest at all in programming, so they simply pass on SQL.
