I am considering returning to school full time and I am
faced with the following problem, does Microsft Certifica
tion- MCDBA outweigh a college diploma? does Microsoft
recommend taking test at the end of training or after
obtaining work experience?

Any input would be appreciated

Ahhh the certification vs. education debate. I will always recommend a
college degree. Of course, obtaining a degree is more difficult and time
consuming, but it is usually well worth it. In reality, you really want all
three sides of the triangle - education, certification and experience.
Ultimately experience is the most important of the three. I started in the
computer field in 1990. I worked full-time building a network from scratch
from my employer (I had no clue what I was doing), at the same time I went
to college at night and worked on my CNE in my "spare time". It was a ton
of work, but by 1998 I had earned my CNE, MCSE, BS and Master's degrees in
Computer Science and had accumulated a ton of experience. It was well worth
the effort!

Good luck,

I don't think you can ever really compare the two. They complement each
other. I have 2 years of college education, but no degree, however, I have
found a great job working in technology because of experience and
certification. But you can never be sure when the computer industy might
take a plunge, or have an over-abundance of workers. 10-20 years down the
road, all the tech certs in the world might not get you a good job. So I
think a college degree is a good idea, just for a fall-back in case things
don't work out. Plus I know of several MCSE's that were turned away from
corporations because of the company's policy to hire people with a 4 yr
degree. Even if the degree is in basket weaving, I think company's just
like to have the assurance that you stuck with something for 4 years. That
makes them feel like you might stick with them.

I am about to go back and finish up my other 2yrs so I can get my degree.
But I will also continue certification tracks.
