Please help. I have been helping friends with their computers for a few
years now. Job experience for 9 years was repairing Konica copiers and some
ATM machines. I am currently reading Michael Myers A+ All in One 5th
edition. I will take the test by summer. I would like to get a job that
would allow me to get more hands on experience on computers while allowing
me to be less than an expert. I have lots of questions and no one to ask.
I applied at Best Buy. Can anyone give me any advice on where to apply that
would help achieve my objective in Fort Worth Texas area?

Thanks.
Donny

Seems as if, nation wide, there is little demand for hardware techs. The
jobs that do exist will only pay $9-10/hr. Remember, a lot of applicants
for a job means the lowest bidder gets the job. At one time a PC was a
complex machine that required a skilled tech. Now someone who is just out
of grade school can build and service a PC. PC's are cheap replaceable
applliances that, sad as it is, are not worth fixing but rather worth
replacing. The only certs that seem to be in demand are the highest level
ones such as: CCIE, CCNP, MCSE-security, CISSP, and CISA. If you want the
most hands on time, offer to repair PC's for free or next to free. People
will line up for your help. You will see a lot of crap and get a bunch of
hands on. It won't make you any or much money but it will help you meet
your objective.

This is basically true but a little bit exagerated.
It is right that IT doesn't pay as much as it used to be and outsourcing is
also a growing reality but there is still some place for skilled and willing
people.

in order to answer donny's original question. here is the place to ask
questions and we'll all try our best to answer it.

True, which is why Dell will generally replace and NOT repair broken down
machines(like my uncle's "former" laptop).
