Author strange beeps from my computer

Yesterday, when I went to boot up my computer, it wouldn't complete the POST
process. It keep sounding like it was trying to spin up the hard drive and
then it would make a single beep. It did this over and over. Then, when I
rebooted, it would make a double beep every so often. Finally, I inserted a
Win XP boot disk and it booted to the Checkdisk screen where it ran
diagnostics and reported that it had fixed errors on the hard drive. Then,
it booted and ran normally.

Once I got it on, I defragged, checked what I could and it ran normally all
day long I decided to set the utility to run the checkdisk program when I
rebooted the next day, and turned it off. Same thing happened today--just
the continuous single beep every so often. So, I turned it off and left the
house. Returning a couple of hours later, I booted it up and it booted
normally and is now running just fine.

Is this a symptom of a power supply going bad? And, if so, how can I check
it while the computer is running?

This is a Pentium 4 2.4 GB Intel CPU with 512 MB of RAM running Windows XP
Pro.

thanks,

Pat

I had a Maxtor hard drive that had trouble spinning up. It was very
intermittent at first but quickly became a major problem. It sounded
like it was spinning maybe half way up, then it would make a low pitched
beep and spin back down. This cycle went on for maybe 3-4 minutes but
eventually it did initialize and ran normally. I was able to copy off
all the data before it finally died completely though. Got lucky, I
think. Can you tell if the beep you're hearing is coming from the system
speaker or the hard drive? You may want to back up anything you can't
afford to lose before it dies completely. Good luck.
