To those who have acheived mcsa certifcation:
Do you feel that classes taken at local tech schools are worth the money? Or
would one do just as well simply studying various texts/guides at home?

Thanks,

JL

Hi

My opinion, reading about computers is like reading about sex, can be fun
but actually participating is even more fun,

"get your hands dirty" working with computers however you can.

I know its not much help, but I'm afraid you'll find those highly variable.
One school may have a great program, the next may be little better than
buying your own quality materials.

Go to the school and do a thorough review of the materials used and etc.
Personally I wouldn't even consider a school unless they offer some quality
lab time with modern equipment.

A second consideration is what 'learning model' is best for you. Some people
do better with self study, some do better with a good instructor, and a
great instructor will benefit either type of student. A poor instructor can
really bring you down though and I really don't know how to suggest
screening instructors prior to actual taking a class.

Third consideration is your personal experience. Lots of experience, less
need for classroom, no experience, more need for classroom.

Good point and interesting analogy, getting one's hand dirty reading about
sex on the computer doesn't count though does it?

If the local tech school is a for-profit school like ITT, Devry, CLC,
Lincoln Tech; then the answers is no. For-profit schools care about one
thing, your money. These schools could care less about weather you pass the
tests or even get adaquate hands on prep time. Spend the money you were
going to use on the classes and buy a few machines and a printer to set up a
domain and play/learn.
