computer not turning on?
|
|
|
| was using my computer the other day and when I was logging off it took ages
so I decided to turn it off manually using the main switch.
Went back to it a couple of days later and it wont even turn on. I keep
trying to push the switch on but I get nothing.
Any ideas?
I have looked inside and tried re-seating everything. Have also tried 3
different ATX power supplies and it makes no difference.
And also tried changing the power cable, no matter what I do I can't get it
to come back to life.

|
| have you made sure its plugged in?

| have you tried bypassing the on switch to see if its the switch itself?

With a meter, test the wall outlet and see if that is not the problem. A
good outlet will read 115 VAC at 60 HTZ and the ground reading zero. If
there is any current on the ground terminal at all, that could be the
problem. If that is good, you've already ruled out the PS, with a small
flathead screwdriver close the circut between the 'power on' pins on the MB
but be very carefull not to touch any other pins.

| If you have disconnected all peripherals and still not having luck, try the following and power on and then off again if the PC doesn't beep :
(remember the main goal is to get the main board to beep)
1. remove the network card.
2. remove the memory. (if it doesn't beeep by now, leave the componnents out)
3. remove the VDO card.
4. set the motherboard jumper to 'clear'
5. remove the modem card + all expansion cards.
6. disconnect all cabling from motherboard except front panel control switch and main wire harness.
<<7.) If still nothing check the power supply
by first seeing if the fan is spinning and check for a self-test bttn.
..if not check the switch on the back of PC.
[220vac or 110vac] (it should be on 110VAC if your not in Europe)..if this is set correctly and there is no fan, I have found a nifty way to check both the PWR supply and the front panel controll switch by "hotwiring" the power supply fan,(if this doesn't work you'll need to buy a new power supply.
1. pull all power connections off the board and other internal components EXCEPT the Hard drive.
2. Find a paperclip and straighten it into a "V".
3. Find the main wire harness connector (its the only one with 20 colored wires)
4. the connector looks like a honeycomb..find the green wire (theres only one and its in the middle)
5. With the PC power disconnected, shove one end of the paperclip into the slot corresponding to the green wire and one into any one of the adjacent hole for a black wire.
..plug the PC power in and the fan will spin if the P.S. is good.
-hope this helps | |

| alot of power switched plug into the motherboard via a two or three pin
connector. Use a screwdriver as a switch between the two pins. It is
rarely the switch but I've had a couple.

I have the same kind of problem and I have varified EVERYTHING is good and
correct, and the PS still will not fire up either of two MBs I have (both
new out of the box). I have tried differend ATX PSs with the same result, no
fans anywhere. No case fans, CPU fans, OR the fan in the PS will start.
Please refure down the line to the "Pulling my hair out!!!" thread started
bu myself...

| Sounds like the power switch has gone out. Replace it.
