| [formerly Tandy for those who remember]
Does anyone know if they require A+ for PC
sales or repairs? Anyone here applied or works there?
How about working at (the now defunct) WIZ or PC Richards
or Comp USA or Circuit City? What was the atmosphere like?
What did you do? Are jobs at these retail places just sales
and stock? I get the feeling repairs are done at some other location.
No one but J&R seems to have in-house PC repairs and they seem
to have a high turn over of sales men.
All the PC repair places around town(NYC) seem to be mom&pop,
fixing PCs over 3 years old whose warranties have expired.
So is anyone here doing PC tech work at corporations?

| A+ is required for service positions only, and not even always for
those. Best Buy is minimal pay (not much more than minimum wage, about
$8/hr; service pays quite a bit more), high pressure to sell service
contracts and extras (cables, ink, etc.) but no tie to compensation at
all (no commission). At CompUSA, you get a commission on service
contract sales. Not sure about other places.

| I was offered a sales job @ Radio Shack and you don't need A+
certification. They were more concerned that you could sell cell
phones and satellite receivers there two big items. They don't sell a
lot of PC's. There repairs are typically done at regional centers not
in store.

I worked 2 years at Best Buy as a PC Technician. Most of that time it
was really fun and I learned a lot (and made some mistakes along the
way). You didn't need to be A+, though it was encouraged. Towards the
end of my employment there, most of the stuff that came in was
encouraged by management to be shipped to the regional service center
and not fixed in-house. Also, high pressure was placed on selling
software, warranties and services.
I also tried the mom&pop shop route. These guys will seem to yank your
chain. About a year ago I got a call from a mom&pop where I dropped
off my resume. I was A+ and had a CompSci degree with 3 years
experience. He wanted to pay me $10/hour! Long before that, when I
was 16, another mom&pop store made me come in twice for an interview.
They waited and waited to give me a straight answer, then offered me
something like $8/hour. That was around the time I already got a job
at Best Buy. I told them to shove it (nicely of course )

What a load of BS. You expect corporate pay and benefits from a Mom&Pop
shop?

Note here that YOU dropped off your resume, then were insulted when they
offered you job.

What did you expect? You applied for an entry level position, you were
offered entry level pay.

They were doing you a favor. And don't EVEN TRY to say that Best Buy started
you at more than that.

So you ARE working now aren't you?

| I would take a job at a mom & pop shop anytime! I wouldn't care about
the pay or benefits because at least I would get my hands-on
experience that I so desperately need. I'm not getting squat hands-on
experience here at home fixing family and friends computers.
Just consider yourself lucky that they called you.... I'm still
waiting for a call :-)

| Great attitude Kathy!
I think sometimes people forget that 2 years of low pay documented
experience looks better on a future resume than 2 years no experience
waiting for the "right job".

Whoa, dude, what's with the attitude? $10/hour seems like a fare
wage with my credentials? I mean, yes, it's mom&pop, but there's no
way $10/hour is going to cover my living expenses. Try $14/hour at
least!

No, I was insulted that they offered such a low wage to me: it was a
waste of my time.

Well, I was expected to be the jack-of-all trades: cash register,
fixing PCs and selling them, I mean, are you for real? $10/hour?
Please!

For the first mom&pop store, Best Buy was 30 cents more. The second
time I went back to work at Best Buy because I couldn't find anything
else it was around the same wage, but it was part-time with much less
responsibility then the mom&pop.

Of course and I make a lot more then $10/hour!!!

I am a network analyst / network support guy (A+ and MCP) and, while I agree that we are worth
$14/hr, no company is going to pay you more because you need more. In other words, a company usually
has a budget for a position. They will find someone that is willing to work for that salary. If you
have a job and you ask your boss for a raise on the basis that you need more money for living
expenses, you wont get the raise. You would need to cite the added responsibilities you have taken
on or the project that you took on that saved the company tons of money. But never "I want a raise
because I need more money for my bills". A boss's response would be to get a cheaper apartment or
sell your car and buy a used one. That will solve your problems.
I am not flaming you. I am in your position. I am just pointing out that mom and pop can pay
whatever they feel it is worth it for them to have a computer technician. If it makes you feel any
better, the local CompUSA here on long Island only pays $13/hr and they pressure you to sell rather
than to repair but you get a whopping 1/2% of the selling price..
