Author Disabling integrated audio on a Dell Dimension 2400 series computer
BLueCoBra

My brother and I purchased a Dell Dimension 2400 series computer with a
Pentium 4 2.40 Ghz processor as a retirement gift for our dad.
We want to install a SoundBlaster Live! Value card from his older (500 Mhz
;o) ) computer.
How do we go about disabling the onboard audio on the Dell before installing
the soundcard?
All Dell manuals and related resources mention nothing close to performing
this.
As I have my own family and live apart from my father I don't have
continuous access to the Dell to figure out on my own if there's any jumpers
or anything involved.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

You should find the setting required to disable your onboard sound in the BIOS Setup utility.

Get into the BIOS (Usually it is the DEL key or it could be F1, F2 or F10) and there should be a
Integrated Peripherals category. You may see Onboard LAN, Onboard NIC and Onboard Audio. When you
choose Audio, it probably says, ENABLED. If you highlighy it and press Enter, it will allow you to
choose DISABLE (or it may require a different way to toggle you choices such as the + - keys or Og
Up/Dwn. Look around and you will see what I mean.

If you can't disable it in the Bios try to disable it in the hardware
properties.

Usually the F2 key gets you into the bios on a dell system. Funny,
because yesterday I had to work on a Dell system and I had to disable
the onboard NIC card :-)

I have always disabled onboard devices from the device manager.

I prefer to do it through the bios. Besides, he isn't going to use the
NIC anyway...

Whatever floats your boat I guess. I thought he wanted to disable the sound

Yes he wants to disable it and put in a "regular" sound card. The one
that he wants to disable is onboard. I mean we all have different ways
of doing our things, and doing it through the bios is the way that I'd
do it. The reason why is because it seems whenever I would do it
through the device manager I always end up with a question mark no
matter what I would do. I would check the "Disable in this hardware
profile", remove the damn thing in the device manager and it would
still come up with the question mark. So instead of going through all
that again, I would just disable it through the bios. It can be
enabled at any time if the sound card didn't work out.

Yes, it is the sound card he was talking about.... sorry, I was
talking about a NIC card that I had to disable for someone else :-)

Wow, thanks all for your replies.
The main reason I asked is I've disabled onboard audio on a different
(non-dell) computer and it was done by jumpers. Just wanted to make sure I
wasn't missing anything.
I also wasn't aware of using F2 to enter bios on a Dell system, as this is
my first Dell I've ever worked on. Thx for pointing that out.
I'm aware of using Device Manager to disable hardware but always considered
that more as of a last ditch effort deal in a situation like this.
BTW, what's up with that massive heat shroud on the proc? Talk about taking
up space! I know why it's there, just a pita if anything needs to be done to
the proc or hsf.
Just read in my latest issue of Maximum PC that although the new Prescott P4
proc will be made with the new 90 nanometer (.09 micron) process and will be
33mm˛ smaller, it will make more heat. Sheesh.
So what will the proc be capable of? It will go up to at least 5Ghz and has
the potential to max out around 10Ghz!
For more info, visit your local newstand ;o)

I see. Ive never disabled through the BIOS but am glad to know it can be
done as an alt. measure. Weird, I never got the question mark in device
manager?

You are welcome :-)

I've worked on Dell computers before and I've always known that it's
the F2 key that gets you into the bios.

Yup, you are also right about the jumpers, but with the Dell computer
you don't have to do it. I had to mess with the jumpers on the
computer I built to disable the onboard sound, but it was an asus
mobo.

Funny that you mentioned the heat shroud on the proc! *LMAO* I thought
the same thing when I opened up the box on this Dell that I am working
on now and seen it! What a beast! *LOL*

I subscribe to Maximum PC too! I just haven't gotten around to reading
it yet. I especially like the mods some of the subscribers do....
unbelieveable! :-)

I know it is weird about the question mark, but let me tell you, it
always seems I am the one that ALWAYS has these weird problems :-p

Went to my dad's house earlier today and everything went as easy as pie.
installed adaware and spybot and killed about 50+files!!...(newbies on
broadband....*shakes head*) lol
Told my dad he has 5.1 sound now...surround sound...that got his attention.
He's a MS Flight Simulator fanatic so it should impress him, hey, whatever,
he just retired, he deserves to have his fun time now. )
BTW, how bout that desk in Max PC? Talk about form meets function. I'm gonna
make me one of those someday, that's sweet!

Thx for all the help, hope I'll be able to reciprocate the favor sometime.
