I am confused about MS XP Licensing Issue. Someone came into my shop and wanted to sell me a Toshiba
Satellite Notebook (6 months old) for a real low price (has the receipt). I know someone who is
interested in it but wants all of the original owner's info wiped so she wants the Restore CDs to
start on a clean state.

If I restore this, it will install XP Home again. When the new owner registers XP Home, is Microsoft
going to give her a problem because it was used before when it was first purchased 6 months ago? If
so, what is the solution?

From reading the Microshaft EULA, software licenses are not
transferrable.

If it were me I'd just do the restore then attempt to re-activate
on-line. If that didn't work I'd then call the M$ activation line and
explain the situation to see what they'd recommend. Bottom line is, your
customer will probably have to pay for another license.

The WinXP product key is tied to the machine's hardware and you can activate
as many times as you want.
Therefore, you won't have a problem redoing the activation.
I am not sure about registration which is unnecessary (but activation is).

No; the copy of XP is licensed to the MACHINE, not the user or owner (of
the machine). In fact, it's not necessary to "register" ANY copy of XP
at all. Registration and activation are two very different things, and
only activation is required.

OK, So when I run the restore cd and it installs a new XP Home on the notebook, are you saying that
the new owner will have no problem activating XP? If so, that would be great.

As long as it's the same machine there should be no problem.

Yes, that is what I'm saying. It will be seen as a reinstallation of
the same product key on the same hardware, which it is, and you can do
that an infinite number of times.

When is the machine not considered the machine anymore? Can one
change out the hard drive and still install the restore CD to the new
hard drive?
