Boot off New hardrive

| I got a celeron 2.4g with 10g hd(2mg buffer), but I just bought a 40g(8mg
bufffer hd). I want to add the 40 hd to the celeron and boot off from it
without reinstall window xp os and data file on the 10g celeron. How do I
transfer the os file from the 10 g to the 40g? Is this possible at all or
do I have to reinstall xp on the 40g? I heard that I have to go to the disk
administrator to do this, but I dont know how. And I heard that I have to
set the both the 10g and 40g as master or something? Is there some kind of
softwares that let you do this much easier?
Thank You

| Who manufactured your hard drive and was there an utility disk included?
If yes, then read the readme file, if no, then Google their site for the
utility.
Follow the directions precisely. Example on Western Digital link below
(#4).

Use Version 11 with XP (some issues reported with 10).

| What I would recommend is that you mount the current 10 gig hard drive
onto a desktop computer as a 2nd hard drive (you will need a $5.00 USD
adapter) and use PowerQuest "Drive Image" to make an image of that
drive's contents. Then remove the 10 gig drive and mount the 40 gig
drive, again use Drive Image to write the image file back out to the 40
gig drive, then put the 40 gig drive back into the laptop.
There are other ways to do this (actually there are LOTS of other ways
to do this), but this is the way that I'd approach the problem.

Being this is Windows XP quite likely a repair/install will be necessary
after the Drive image has restored the image file back to the 40 gig drive.
Somehow the booting files can get lost in the "translation".

| I've done this many times and the new hard drive boots immediately with
no further action. I always use FAT32 partitions, however. Also, to
the extent that NTFS security mechanisms may get in the way of things,
there may be a difference between XP Home and XP Pro in this regard.

I apologized if my original question confused you, Barry. Anyway, I got a
desktop for this machine, not a laptop.
I was at a retail computer store today when I came across partition magic
8.0, which says it can move system file and transfer file between hard
drives.I was about to purchase it, but a friend of mine said he has one, and
will let me borrow. Anyway, any of you folks have any experience using
partition magic 8.0? Will it work like drive image? Will it copy and
transter system files like it says will would?
Thank you.

| Mark, Maxblast will do the trick. One just has to follow the
instructions.

| Partition Magic is put out by the same people who publish drive image
and is a companion product. I feel strongly that every serious PC owner
should have both. I wasn't aware that PM would move a partition from
one drive to another, perhaps this feature has been added at some point.
In any case, neither PM nor Drive Image deals with individual files,
they move only entire partitions, "lock, stock and barrel".
